How to make garlic instant mashed potatoes with cloves?
So normally when I make instant mashed potatoes I just add powdered garlic to give it a garlic flavor. However, I have a whole bunch of garlic cloves I need to used. How would I use them to give garlic flavor to instant mashed potatoes. The only thing I can think of is to boil a bunch of cloves in the water I am going to use to make the potatoes. Will this work? How many cloves? If its not a good idea, give me another idea.

Three options for you.
Roast the garlic first then add the roasted garlic to the potatoes. The roasted will give a nice mild but full flavor.
Your other option would be to simmer the garlic in your liquid for a while before you add the potatoes. When the cloves are soft you could either mash them into the mixture or remove them.
Last you could add the garlic to butter and allow it to flavor the butter then add the butter to the potatoes.

Peel 3-5 cloves then mash or mince them. Saute in pan with 4 Tbsp butter for 3-5 minutes. Make the instant then add garlic butter. The number of cloves depends on how much you like garlic. Also the amount of butter depends on how much mashed you are making. You'll have to experiment a little. I like a lot of both personally. Boiled garlic? Yuk!!!! 1 clove of garlic = 1/8 tsp of garlic powder by the way.

Well I'm not an instant mashed potato person- but one suggestion would be to get plain instant mashed potatoes and flavor them yourself with butter, salt, garlic powder (or fresh garlic) and dried (or fresh) herbs. (Or add cheese and make cheesy potatoes) Another idea would be to boil a few potatoes and then just mash them in with the instant. The lumps of the few real potatoes (and hey you could even leave the skins on- no one would know they weren't home made) will help even out the consistency but since you are combining the two its not nearly as much work. (Try adding red potatoes or Yukon Gold which mashes easily) Its only about 10 minutes extra work (not including boiling time) Another suggestion would be to put the mashed potatoes in a casserole dish and put them under the broiler for a few minutes to get the tops all crunchy- you could always add parmesan cheese to the top to make a nice cheesy crust Lastly I'm not sure who makes it but theres a new product out which is fresh potatoes made instantly. I only saw a commercial for them once but basically its real potatoes which were frozen that you make instantly in your microwave. Probably not as good as homemade- but def sounds like a step up from instant. Hope these ideas help- they still aren't as good as making them from scratch so if you have the time cut up and boil some potatoes and then give the kids or your husband or friends a masher and let them mash it while watching tv or gossiping with you. I always enlist help to mash the potatoes!

Mince the garlic and saute it in (just a little) butter or olive oil. When it begins to turn golden, remove it from the heat and add it, butter and all, to your mashed potatoes.

chop the clove of garlic super fine and add it to the mashed, will take less than of the garlic powder or you could overwhelm the potatoes.

Roast them, for sure. It's delicious and blends smoothly and perfectly with mashed potatoes. SO good.

You just chop a bit up really finely and use the same as your powdered garlic. Remember fresh is stronger than dried.
