Circuit breaker tripped, I'm clueless?

Ok I'm clueless on electricity so I apologize if I don't explain clearly.

In my garage, I have an outlet that had the little "reset" and test buttons like in the bathroom. My garage lights stopped working, and my water filter (it's external but the wire was run into the garage and plugged into the outlet) powered off too. I have tried on the fuse box to my house (I own my house so have no landlord) to switch it on and off and it switches all the way on and off just fine, but still no power. The outlet says "light must be on when tripped" and the light comes on when I turn the fuse box to "on" for the garage. I've hit the "reset" button on the outlet 100,000 times and it immediately trips again every time, even though everything is off or unplugged. Please help.

Many times GFCI outlets go bad and simply cease working. If pushing the reset button does not work, then the outlet must be replaced. GFCI outlets are prone to failure, this is why they recommend to test them monthly.

Only two possibilities. The GFI breaker is bad or you have a dead short in the circuit. I'd try replacing the breaker first. They do go bad. If it still trips, remove everything hooked to that circuit one at a time and see if you find a problem. If it just receptacles, they only cost $2 each and I'd just replace those. :Your code may be different, but if that garage is an inside garage, Ground faults are not required, but are a good idea. They are required for outside plugs, I'd look there first for a short as it may be connected to the garage circuit.

Other answers are quality! Possibly you might have a surge protector Breaker. Now with these you have to turn the breaker off. Count 10 full seconds and then turn back on! If energy does no longer come back on then are trying those different answers!

Your GFCI outlet is bad. Replace it and you should be ok.
