Two vicious stray dogs killed my beloved cat of 7 years. What to do if I find them?
My beautiful cat was mauled to death by two huge stray dogs recently and it was absolutely heartbreaking. That cat was like my best friend and burying its torn up body was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I have not seen the dogs running about lately which makes me suspect they belong to someone and escape every so often to wreak havoc around the neighborhood. They are very large dogs and I've heard they've killed many other cats around the neighborhood. I may have just found out who owns them. If so, what are my options when I speak to the owner? Are there any legal repercussions if your dogs go around murdering other people's pets? Or does he does get off scott free with an assurance he'll try to prevent them from escaping again? Can I call animal control to have the dogs impounded even if they're now in his backyard? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU SO MUCH to the people here who offered their well-wishes, support, and advice during this difficult time, especially McKayla and Pene. Its too difficult to choose a best answer so I prefer not to. But thank you so much again!

I'm so very sorry for what happened to your beloved pet.
Anyone who owns cats know how sometimes its impossible to keep them in at all times, they will always find a way outside if they want. Don't listen to these on here that said "If you had..." They don't know what there talking about.
I would make a report regardless, and let authorities know these animals are on the loose and killed your cat. Call the dog pound.
Again, I'm so very sorry for this awful loss. My heart goes out to you and your pet.

1. Some cats can be kept in, and some can't.
2. A cat on a leash or harness would be further restraint for the cat, keeping it from escaping.
3. Unfortunately, despite the fact that dogs are known to sometimes attack cats, the concern might also be for people if they are that viscious. Are you SURE the dogs did it? Sometimes there are also coyotes that will attack smaller animals.
Be sure you know this truly was the fault of the dogs before you put in a report, and also what will happen to the dogs. You can ask your local animal control what the laws are in this regard. I am sorry your cat has passed, but you can picture him whole, now, wherever cats who were loved go.
Perhaps you can talk with the owners?

I am SO sorry :( There are a couple thing you have to take into account here. It IS possible to take legal actions but it may or may not do anything. If the dogs attack and killed your cat on your property, you could get the owners for trespassing and violation to keep dogs on a leash and in their yard. The dogs could be taken away for that matter. I'm not necessarily sure, but I know with dogs, if YOUR dog isn't on a leash, nothing can be done. Dogs should be on leashes at all times when outside. (unless they are in your back yard being fenced or something.) But dogs and cats are two totally different things. Was there any medical things you had to pay for? Because if so, the owners may have to pay for that. Best thing to do would be to talk to animal control and see what they can do. They may be able to do something, and they may not. Have the dogs been running around before? Because something can also be done about that too. You may not be able to get something done about what happened to your poor little feline friend, but you could be able to keep other pets/ possibly little kids safe. Like I said, talk to your Local Animal Control and go from there. Hope things work out, and once again, so sorry about your kitty.

My dearest Siamese zany was killed by three street dogs yesterday. He generally preferred to hang around our garden, and never strayed. I live in a quiet residential area and had been lulled into a false sense of security. At four in the morning I heard a lot of cat screaming and put it down to competitive toms. The electricity had cut so though myself and my freaking out dogs looked outside our garden I saw nothing til first light where I spied zany stretched out on the grass, his back broken and covered in saliva. I then got my dogs and they found the desert dogs in the area and gave them a jolly good showing off. I have yet to bury zany in the garden, I tried to last night but was a bit too drunk and left his head and tail uncovered. Will try again tonight with a few less glasses of wine. Poor zany, we had ten more years ahead together.
Child security is clearly an issue. I do not understand why the dogs toy with cats and don't eat them for food, I could forgive that.

Id report the mutts! What happened to your poor cat is horrific, I cant imagin the pain your feeling. You did the right thing letting it out, I feel so sorry for cats shut up in the house all day because the owners dont want to let them roam. Cats actually have a legal right in the uk to roam did you know? Dogs however, do not. God forbid that had been a child they attacked!!! Report to the police and rspca/local dog place.
Again, I am so sorry for your loss, your cat is lucky to have had a owner like yourself. It'll be ok, times a great healer, and I bet you have some amazing memories xx

Call your local humane society and lodge a formal complaint. (If you don't know who owns the dogs.) If you actually saw the dogs maul your cat you can file a complaint with your local police station (if you know who owns the dogs). There may be some sort of restitution; depending on your local laws. At any rate, you should call the police and ask them to get involved with getting these dogs off the street.
I am so sorry for your loss. Hugs

Unfortunately if you don't have positive proof these dogs killed your cat, you cannot legally do a thing to the owners other then report the loose dogs to the police.
And IF your cat had been inside the house or supervised outside (harness/leash or enclosure) and not roaming loose (like the dogs were) then your beloved pet would still be with you.
So IMO its mainly YOUR fault for not keeping the cat on your property supervised or inside the house where its safer.

Why was the cat outdoors? This is exactly what happens to roaming cats. Don't cry and moan about it when you don't want to be a responsible pet owner.

Had you cat been inside of your home it would not have been killed.
This is one of the things that happen to cats when allowed to roam around outside.
There is nothing you can do but grieve for your cat.
You can make a report to animal control but I doubt if anything will be done.
@Fox, you are wrong, it is no at all impossible to keep cats inside at all times. Every cat I have owned minus my kennel cats have been kept inside very well.
They are safe, warm in winter and cool in winter and do not have all of the illnesses outside cats get.
Safe from all predators.

I just wanted to say blaming the op for letting the cat outside is cruel. What are they supposed to do? Subject their cat to a live of boredom indoors just because that's where you think a cat should be?
