Really bad ankle pain?

Three days ago I woke up with such horrible pain in my ankle..like 9/10 pain and making it really hard to walk. I stayed in bed for a little while then ended up taking advil and throughout the day the pain went down to like 2/10 and I was able to do 8 hour shift on my feet no problem so I thought it was fine. But then it happened again yesterday and today where I wake up in unbearable pain. I bought a brace and I kept my foot raised I just don't understand how overnight it keeps getting worse.

I haven't had any recent injuries and I really don't wanna go to the doctors if I don't have to because I don't have health insurance, but how many days should I wait for it to get better?

There's no way to tell what is going on without some sort of medical intervention. I understand your concerns about insurance but something that is registering a 9 on the pain scale definitely requires an x-ray at minimum. The x-ray will show if there is any ligament damage or some sort of orthopaedic problem such as a spur (a spur is an outgrowth of the ankle bone which can cause your pain).

If there is nothing physically wrong, it may be biochemical or metabolic in nature in which case you will require a blood test. If there is inflammation, it could be an indication of arthritis. If you have elevated levels of uric acid/urate, the problem may be gout.

Again, I understand your reluctance to seek medical attention, but if your pain is as unbearable as you describe, you can't spend the rest of your life on pain meds. Best to get a proper diagnosis and get to the root of the problem.
