Controlling cat's eating?

I have 2 cats 3 and 4 years of age. The 3 year old is male who has had urinary issues. He's on C/D food from vet. He will eat wet food but can take all day just to finish a 3oz can. I give him canned in morning and 1/4 cup dry in the evening.

The 4 year old female is overweight and has hairball issues. She won't eat wet food so I give her 1/4c dry Blue Buffalo 2x a day. They are both nibblers. I have always measured food and had scheduled times to feed them. Even if they act hungry at the wrong time they get no extras but they still eat from both bowls.

The girl is getting too fat I would like to control her feeding but since they don't finish dry in one sitting I don't know what to do with the leftover food. I have separate feeding areas I try to close off to give each cat time to eat

Update:

My routine right now is wake up with alarm at 7am, feed the kitties, put on coffee, play on tablet or something and watch tv for a bit (they both usually visit litter box within an hour of me waking up so i wait to scoop, then go back to bed for awhile) sometimes I eat when im up sometimes I get up again.

I feed girl kitty in the hallway where I can close the door. She actually expects her bowl to be put there and sits there waiting like its the kitchen table. sometimes she will go right away and sometimes not but she doesnt eat very much at one time usually

it kinda hard feeding them in micro amounts all day. Id never be able to do anything then. They sleep most of the afternoon and are both expecting dinner around 5. we usually eat around the same time also, Ill feed them first then get my food ready so they are pretty much on a routine its just they dont wat their food at one sitting. I have tried giving less and keeping food in the measuring cup in food bag but sometimes would

Update 2:

The boy has one 3 oz can of food plus 1/4 cup of dry C/D. I used to give him canned just a couple times a week, now its everyday. I WAS using Blue Buffalo Indoor food till the boy was put on C/D. They both ate the C/D and vet said it was okay. Now that the boy is on canned once a day I was back to Indoor for the girl since she has issues with hairballs (some weight could just be hair she has a hard time taking laxatone and other stuff to help with that) they pretty much eat from whichever bowl. and she just be getting too much plus her lack of exercise. The boy is more active but the girl does run around sometimes on her own, plays with her toys once in awhile and her and the boy chase each other.

Ill probably keep what i been doing but have some private feeding for the girl and not leave both bowls with food out at night.

I have never agreed with the "only feed them twice a day and ignore their inner hunger signals" way of thinking. Cats do nibble when they are hungry. If the girl doesnt eat the wet food and the boy is only on the cans then is there a problem? Or is the problem that they are at each other's food? Have you tried the weight control food on her? It IS possible for her to lose weight without feeling hungry.

Ask your vet, would the diet cat food be ok for the boy? If so, that is probably your answer.

You might need to set up more of a routine. Such as adding things that you do to indicate when food gets put down and when it get's picked up. If you eat cereal every morning you could put your bowl and the box on the counter to be ready to be poured then put their food down. Then prepare and eat your food. And if you need to wait to give them about 45 minutes to eat. Then when that is done put the dish in the sink and the cereal away then pick up their food. If you are consistent they will learn the signs and know when food time is and when food time is over. Since they are nibblers you may need to do small afternoon feeding for about 20-30 minutes. Also you will want to have another routine for the night feeding as well. Your cats' eating habits can be changed it's just going to take a bit of work.

Don't try to force a cat to eat they aren't like a dog and will snack when only they feel hungry.

Try the new Rise n Shine by Friskies. Its about $7 for a 5lb bag but we give a few to our cat as a

treat. He come back in the house through his cat dog about every hour for a treat or to eat.

    Feed them seperately.
