    "There are five minutes left" is correct. However, when you are talking about 5 minutes as a singular quantity, you use "is" e.g "Five minutes if too long."

    Take a look at the word minutes. One minute is singular. Five minutes is plural. Is is singular, Are is plural. So - there are 5 minutes left.

    If It were only a single minute you would say "There Is 1 minute left" but since It's plural, you use "there are"
