Found Cat - how long till she's mine?
We found a cat hanging around our house this past weekend. She stayed there until dark when I opened the door and she came right in. I didn't feel right leaving her out at night (I live where there are plenty of wild animals and lots of stories of cats being eaten). We put up signs around town the next day, and I still haven't gotten a call. I plan on bringing her to the vet this weekend to check for a microchip, but I know that's uncommon in cats. How long should I wait before taking the signs down? We really like her, but I also don't want to give up if she does have a home. I live in California if there are laws pertaining to this.
Thanks!
Please know, we are making every effort we can right now with the resources we have. I plan on doing everything I can to find her owner, if there is one. But I am also well aware of how many strays there are, and she is a young cat, so it's hard to say. Please don't take my title as saying I'm going to keep her and make no effort. Your advice is helpful on finding her owner. Thank you

Generally you have to make a "reasonable effort" to find the owner. Getting her scanned for a microchip is one way. The posters you put up are another. Next step is to call your local shelters to see if anyone has reported a lost cat. When you call the one that is the pound or animal control, ask them if there are any local laws that cover this sort of thing. I kind of doubt it, and I would think that two weeks would be more than long enough.

Legally all you have to do is place a free found ad in the newspaper. It runs for three days and if nobody answers it the animal is yours. Simply say something like female cat found near xxx and xxx streets. Call and describe to claim.
Give them very little information to go on and make them describe the cat and tell you its name and see if it comes when called.
Have the vet do a blood test for FIV and FeLV, deworm it, and check for a microchip and determine if it needs to be spayed.
Good luck!

Place a 2 week add in the paper. If know one claims her and no one can identify her, she is yours. If she is in your house, has not tried to leave and you live in a sparsely populated area, chances are that the owners dumped her. Also contact your animal shelter and place a found info sheet there and looks through their books for lost cats. I think that you have found yourself a cat. :)

Have you checked ASPCA? A lot of people who lose their pets report it to them and the police.
When my dog went missing we called the police RSPCA, kennels etc.
She'll never be yours, and cats are microchipped, Ours are, doesn't mean she hasn't got an owner.
Some cats travel great lengths, we have cats near us who are friendly, even had one try and get in the house. But it was owned, just because she went into your house doesn't mean you can keep her.
Yes take her to the vets, maybe ask them if they have had reports of missing cats in the area. Even phone others.
