My cats keep disappearing?

so, i've had at least one cat (maybe two... haven't seen her in a couple days) and 5 kittens go missing over the course of the past 4 months. one of the kittens that went missing returned 3 days later with a broken leg so we thought maybe it was hawks taking off with them because hawks apparently drop their prey from high heights to kill them and maybe that one survived and managed to get away. the thing is we never had cats/kittens just go missing like this. i live in central ohio, so would anyone know of any predators that could be picking them off. for the first few, we thought it was coyotes eating them, but why would a coyote only break the leg of a kitten (+ how could it get away anyhow if it was a coyote attack??)

i would love to know what you guys think because my best guess is hawks, even though we've always had them around with no problem until this year.

ps, they are outdoor cats because my parents wont allow indoor cats. also, i live in a rural county if that means anything....

Update:

i didn't ask your opinion on whether or not they should be kept indoors. i asked what you think the problem is. i'm not taking them to shelters. i'm not keeping them indoors. they have shelter enough in our barn. they get fed everyday and have fresh water.

yahoo answers is completely useless for advice on cats it seems because the only thing you people seem to be able to talk about is that you think cats should be kept indoors.

That is what happens to outdoor cats, there are so many hazards they face outdoors. Unless they can be indoors 24/7, you need to either find new homes for them or else take them to a no-kill shelter or rescue who can find them homes where they can live full lives indoors, not be killed outdoors.

Hi I'm not going to tell u cats should be indoors all the time. Although I have six all indoors only because I live in the city. As long as they have good shelter to get into its perfectly fine cats love to be outdoors and fresh air is good for them. Anyway what I would do is ask around the neighborhood and see if other cats have gone missing in the same time frame as urs and if they would know what is happening. Hawks do take anything small enough to grab....cats even small dogs. I hope u find ur remaining cats and that u find what's happening to them.

they aren't really yours if they are always outside . if you see them again take them to an animal shelter where they can be cared for the right way.
