Why is it that Christian people can wink at sin, like couples living together without marriage?
Or, teen agers having babies? Sometimes, teen age boys brag about how many children they have with several girls.
Or serial monogamy? Men and women who marry, divorce, marry again, divorce again, etc.
And now, it's homosexual marriage. And if rumors are to be believed, some people are honestly trying to decriminalize beastiality!
And yet, when polygamy is mentioned, people go off the deep end! Men who have more than one wife are sexual animals, etc.
I know that these Fundamentalist Mormons are taking it to extremes. But, most polygamists don't marry that many women. Most only have maybe two or three.
They are accused of adultery, but they are MARRIED, while REAL adulterers are totally ignored by almost all churches.
I know that polygamy will never be legalized, because it would give women power that most men don't want them to have. Take, for instance, Bill Clinton. All his women are well known; Monica, Gennifer, Paula, etc. Now, if polygamy were legal, these women could say to Bill, "Look, you want it? You better put a ring on it!" (with apologies to Beyonce). And everyone knows it's cheaper to have a mistress than it is to have a wife. And more than one wife could break the bank.
So, what's so gawdawful terrible about polygamy? Perhaps churches should try looking sin in the face, and calling it what it is.
I guess I didn't make myself totally clear.
I do not condone anything by the Fundamentalist Mormons, Warren Jeffs' group.
I believe that polygamy, far from demeaning women, would empower them. Women give men too much power.
Have you ever seen those stupid talk shows where this man tells his girlfriend that he slept with her best friend or something, and then these women are fighting over this creep, and he's just sitting there, digging it. Why would either of them want HIM? They should look at each other, then say, you know what? He's not worth it. Let's go shopping! and then leave him.
Polygamy can be demeaning to women, IF you give him the power to do so. But, if you TAKE that power, you can start to have a real working relationship, where no one demeans anyone.
Brigham Young encouraged all his wives to better themselves. Become teachers and entrepreneurs, and he even sent at least one and maybe as many as three, of his wives back east to college to becom
to become doctors.

For many people it's less about sin and more about what is culturally acceptable as normal. If polygamy were a part of the culture, like men having multiple children from multiple women is, nobody would be going off the deep end over it.
Also, many people view polygamy as being demeaning to women because they are focusing on the sexual aspect of it.

The only reason for a person to marry is so you can share retirement benefits IF you are not bound by God to be married. It is costly to divorce. It is costly to marry . Half of marriages end in divorce unless this statistic is higher now.
Christians do not wink at that kind of nonsense. They can't control other people's behaviors.
It is not our place to be the Holy Spirit who convicts of sin. We simply live and love .
The best way to get people to marry is to forbid them from doing so.
The Old Testament allowed polygamy for men. Women had to keep the same man . This is really unfair and speaks of a bias toward women.

Christians do more than wink at sin. They lick sin in the anus.
They hate, persecute, judge, and commit all of the 7 deadlies, but they only notice others who do it, not themselves. But ofcourse they will be forgiven by their sky daddy so none of that matters.
If you are not a Christian then you better become one so that you can get in on the sinning action without going to hell! All you have to do is get on god's balls and obey. It's easy once you learn to ignore your logic.

What makes you think they are Christians? They are no more Christian for living in sin with someone they are not married to, than the Mormons are for committing adultery by taking a second wife.

A true follower of Jesus doesn't wink at ANY sin.
Why do true followers of Jesus dislike polygamy, because it goes against what God teaches us about marriage:
Genesis 2:24
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Ephesians 5:31
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."
Titus 1:5–7
5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,
6 namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe
1 Timothy 3:2
2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable,
God never commanded polygamy in the old testament, it did happen but not directed from God.
The practice caused all kinds of problems for Abraham, David, Solomon...his wives turned his heart AWAY FROM GOD. 1 Kings 11:3
3 He had 700 wives who were princesses and 300 concubines, and they turned his heart away from the Lord.
Moses’ law said, the king “shall not multiply horses to himself… Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold” (Deuteronomy 17:16-17).
Are you trying to defend the mormons polygamy by throwing stones?

Well, according to Christian doctrine you can sin all you want, as long as you "believe in Jesus" you will be saved. Yet Catholics, Mormons, and Jehovah's Witnesses all "believe in Jesus", and yet these 3 Christian religions get condemned to hell by so many even though all three take the Bible very seriously according to their teachings.
I was taught all throughout my childhood: "Believe in Jesus and you're saved". When I asked "What if I do something bad?" the answer was "Jesus has you covered". Mainstream Christianity never really made sense to me. You will never find me in a Trinitarian Church again.

A true Christian like Jehovah's Witnesses does not wink at sin of any type. They keep the congregation of God clean for his inspection so they can be found spotless. 2Peter 3:14 Hence, beloved ones, since YOU are awaiting these things, do YOUR utmost to be found finally by him spotless and unblemished and in peace.

Considering your avatar name, I think you already know the answer. Polygamy is a special case that is allowed only if and when the Lord commands. No other church has a prophet, so the command can come only through my (our?) church. Right now, the rule is 1 wife, 0 concubines, and 0 mistresses/girlfriends.
Marriage is good when good people do it. You do have a point; honorable and accepted marriage is best, regardless of the number of wives Christ allows. Just remember that it's one wife as a limit right now.
One's own.

because to disqualify the sabbath we needed to nail all the commandments to the cross. so, live free, sin free, sin abundantly so that grace can be dispensed more abundantly.
if you believe what i say is true, you have been stuck in satan's churches too long

"So, what's so gawdawful terrible about polygamy?"
So you still think polygamy is a personal choice among consenting adults?

See the story of a woman who finally escaped.

Considering Utah's shameful failure to prosecute polygamists, I find this question ridiculous. It took Texas to put Warren Jeffs in jail where he belongs.
See the LDS newsroom official statement on marriage, with emphasis on these quotes from it: "marriage between a man and a woman is essential to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children." and "the Church favors measures that define marriage as the union of a man and a woman."
http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/same-sex-att...
It appears that the LDS church officially tells the world that marriage is between one man and one woman, while it gives a wink and a nod to polygamy happening in Utah. It reminds me of the 1852 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants.
"Inasmuch as this church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication, and polygamy; we declare that we believe that one man should have one wife; and one woman but one husband, except in case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again."
http://archive.org/stream/bookofdoctrineco01unse#p...
In 1852 the LDS church was lying to the world. It proclaimed it's belief of one man and one wife, while at the same time LDS leaders and others were living in polygamous relationships in Utah. Missionaries in England were lying while showing the Doctrine and Covenants statement.
So I read the LDS' public proclaimed position on marriage, then see a Mormon on yahoo asking "So, what's so gawdawful terrible about polygamy". Which way is it Mormons? Your church lied before about practicing it. Your disgusting turning of a blind eye to it's victims from a splinter group of your own faith screams louder than any attempts to rationalize polygamy.
