I have a hard butterscotch candy recipe and it calls for rum extract. Can I use a real rum instead?

I already have a spiced dark rum on hand. The recipe looks so good!

    Hey Buttercup, as long as it's a good over proof rum like a Jamaican Rum. I found with the rum Grace brought back, the dark over proof was best.
