Can someone please tell me what actually happens to a dog or cat when they are euthanized?

I have had many pets in my lifetime and many of them were euthanized due to illness or because their quality of life was no longer what they should of been. I recently had to have my little Sugarplum euthanized because of cancer and afterwards I couldn't stop feeling guilty and feeling like she died a horrible death. Partly because of when they started to inject her she tried to pull her leg away like it hurt and her pink little tongue was hanging out of her mouth afterwards and I never noticed this with my other pets. Also because I've since learned of a drug they use in surgeries that paralyze you but because of this drug they have to be put on a ventilator or else they suffocate because the muscles stop working. Please tell me this is not what happens to a beloved pet. I'm devastated just thinking that I might of done that to all the pets I've had.

Update:

They had already started an I.V. so the needle was being injected into that. None of my other pets had done that before. Thank-you for your answer even though I still feel guilty.

The only drug i've heard of used to euthanize dogs is euthasol. It is quick and painless. Your dog did not suffer while being euthanized. By starting to inject do you mean inserting the needle? Or acctually administering the drug? If it was while the needle was being inserted, that is common. Any dog i've taken blood from has flinched when the needle was inserted into the vein.

Euthanasia is due to cerebral death in conjunction with respiratory arrest and circulatory collapse. Cerebral death occurs prior to the cessation of cardiac activity.

Im sorry you had to put your dog down. I assure you she didnt suffer through the process of the euthanasia.

That machine you're talking about is called a heart lung machine when used for human surgery and probably the same with animal surgery. Your animal flinched because of the needle prick which was the only pain they felt. Euthanasia is very similar to a human overdose death from a depressant which is often referred to as "nodding off into eternity" because you literally don't know you're dying until you're dead if it's possible to know you're dead at all of course

We were there to let our Lab go. And the vet explained what they would do. She just gave the dog an "overdose" which would stop the heart in a few seconds and the dog laid her head down and they gently closed her eyes with their hands.
