My cat kind of lets out a painful meow when I try to pick him up?

My cat never and I mean NEVER meows when I pick him up. And now, when I tried to pick him up twice, he meowed and it sounded like one of those meows where a cat might be in pain and he felt a little restricted like her couldn't even move, a little. Should I be worried or am I just exaggerating?

He could just want to be left alone but he could also be in pain. It sounds like you know the different meows that he does. Not to scare you, but my male cat who is the most affectionate cat ever, starting crying when I picked him up. It wasn't normal and neither was his cry. I took him in and it turned out he had a urinary blockage caused by crystal and this is very very serious. Keep an eye on him, check his bathroom habits (is he pooping normal, straining to pee? If he's peeing check the size of what he peed) make sure he's eating and drinking water normally. If you notice changes have him checked out. And if you're super worried you can have him seen and usually by them feeling their stomachs they can tell if more testing needs to be done. I'm sure your fur baby is just fine <3

Sometimes they are just not in the mood to be picked up. Maybe he was tired, or maybe he's overdue for a litter box break. It's not always about you and when you want to pick him up.
