The shape is made from ten congruent squares.
a) if the perimeter of the shape is 40cm what is its area?

Perimeter is the added measure of all the sides. Since a square has 4 sides, dividing the perimeter by 4 will give you the length of one side. Since your perimeter is 40, this means that 40/4 is 10cm.
Squares, by definition have equal sides and you must multiply length times width to get area, by definition as well. So 10cm is the length of all the sides and the area will be 10 x 10, which is 100cm^2.
