I fell on my arm and now my shoulder and neck hurts?

Yesterday I fell down the stairs and caught myself with my left arm. At first I thought I broke it cause I couldn't move it then it gradually loosened up. My shoulder is still painful and if I move it in certain directions it sends pain down the back of my arm. It also hurts to touch my shoulder near my color bone kind of in the joint. A few hours after it happened the right side of my neck started to hurt to. It's been a day and I can't really turn it and it hurts. My shoulder has eased up but it's still painful and a bit swollen. Should I see a doctor?

i would say to you to go to the hospital wing and get it checked out, you could have done serious damage to your arm , the ligaments may have been pulled , this would would make your arm very painful, the most likely thing that may wrong is , that you have fractured the ball and socket joint pain killers like panadol or aspirin should not be taken prior to an X.ray this means you should see a Dr,and have a scan or X,ray done straight away , if your in pain as you must be therefore stronger pain killers which you will have to take , you may be referrred to the physiotherapy for a session of treatment ,get some one to put tour arm in an arm banage this will relieve the pain , please go and see a Doctor , Sincerely Cornelius .

    Sorry to hear that.

I suspect it's a separated shoulder. http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00033 This injury is common when falling on an outstretched arm.

But it could be one of many types of shoulder injuries. Here is a listing http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/shoulderinjurie...

Here is a video that explains common shoulder injuries http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9aUQNwg5Ys

You should see an orthopedist who will do physical tests and imaging tests (XRay, MRI). This will determine what condition you have.

Perhaps all you will need is physical therapy. The orthopedist will say so. This is good. I believe conservative measures like this should be done.

Some doctors recommend cortisone shots to reduce inflammation. I don’t recommend this. They actually weaken your tendons, making your shoulder less stable and worse.

Another option you can do is Platelet Rich Plasma and Stem Cell Therapy –a low intrusive procedure involving injections of your platelets and stem cells. It will regenerate and heal the injury effectively and quickly. It’s best if the doctor uses ultrasound to guide the proper placement of the injection. Here is a video.

    Hope this helps.
