How many of you college students here have ever changed your college because you were not happy?
My daughter is not happy at the college of her choice and this concerns me. What is your story? Why didnt you like the school? Are you happy now and glad you made the chnage or do you regret it?

I switched schools for my second Master's because I felt the school I started at was providing a sub-par education and had no real interest in its students (a feeling that was only confirmed when my adviser didn't even ask what was wrong or if there was anything she could do to help when I told her I was thinking of withdrawing and transferring elsewhere). It was a great decision because I wound up going to a much better school and I'm happy with the education I got there.

Changing colleges was probably the best decision I made in my life and I have my father to thank me for it. I studied marine biology for a year. I'm not American by the way so no where in the states. In retrospect I didn't really think it through when I chose that. I just wanted away from my hometown, meet some people, party and all that. And that's what I did. In my class we were over 70 girls and 15 boys. So, I was a happy boy indeed. But by the end of the first year I had failed about half my classes, achieved nothing academically and I was set back about 8000$.
So my father took my the ear, sat me down and said: "Ok, it is time for you to grow up. Stop looking at life like you want it to be and start looking at it like it is. It's not all about fun. If you're going to spend all that money do it on something worth spending on. If not, get out of college and find a job".
We made a deal. I would do some research, talk to teachers, talk to some older student and see what the job prospects were. If the results were good I could stay, if there were bad I had to quit or change programs.
I found out that less than 10% of the students get a job in that field. I changed to mechanical engineering. Did I have fun during those 3 years of engineering? No, I didn't. It was a proper school. Not a lot of partying. However, my life is amazing now. I got to travel because of my degree, I get to see the world, I got a good salary.
My advice is this. College is not like a movie. It's not all about fun. Sometimes in life you have to suck it up and just do it. It is your responsibility to steer your daughter in the right direction, like my father did with me. Make sure she is studying something good. If not, try to get her to do that.
