Dog Section: Good Ohio German Shepherd Breeders?

Does anyone here know of a GOOD breeder of GSDs in Ohio or Eastern PA? What about this kennel,Willow Valley,in Mineral City,OH? There is a pup from this kennel on my town and she is beautiful, but I have a problem with them calling black GSDs "rare." My good friend who breeds, trains and rescues GSDs and is well-known in the working GSD circle, has never heard of this kennel, either. But the dogs are beautiful and they do have health guarantees. I lost my GSD,Lulu in Sept to bladder cancer. I miss having a GSD so much. I want to get a puppy because it will have to get used to my Chihuahua and my cats.I won't get one until my 17-year-old dog Maggie is gone, because a puppy would be too much for her. I also want to train the puppy to be a therapy dog. So it won't be for at least a year or two. Can anyone here recommend a good breeder in Ohio or PA?

Here is Willow Valley's website: http://willowvalleygsd.com/

Thanks.

Research legitimate breeders from all over the country. No, they will not sell these dogs at like pet smart or something. The price depends on the breeder, their reputation within the breeder community, the papers which are available showing the lineage of the dog, whether they were bred for show and/or for temperament. For a dog of this type, one would have to be willing to pay $1,000 or more.

My friend and her Husband, who's a retired Michigan Police State Trooper and Dectective, got their last GSD b*tch from this breeder:

Some of their dog's aren't the prettiest of dogs, but they can WORK. If you're an experienced handler of this type of dog, this is the breeder for you. My friends Dianne and David have had GSD's for nearly 40 years, and the one they have now from the above breeder is by FAR *da bomb.* You might want to check them out.

Add: Oops, I forgot to mention that my friend's b*tch *Kira* is black, and NOT rare!

This is not a good breeder, I would look elsewhere.

    ● "Good Ohio German Shepherd Breeders"

That's where your MAIN question is supposed to be, but it doesn't ASK us anything, so is not a question.

It is over to you to place your question in the right section. Do not state the section as though it were part of your question.

    ● "Does anyone here know of a GOOD breeder of GSDs in Ohio or Eastern PA?"

Most registered-as-GSDs in NAmerica are unworthy of the breed's name, but eligible under AKC and CKC rules because their parents were registered as GSD and so were their ancestors, until eventually, many generations ago, there were ancestors that were genuine GSDs, with the performance certificates to prove it.

    ● " What about this kennel,Willow Valley"

I wouldn't touch their stock - it does NOT meet the requirements of the International Standard of the GSD, approved at conferences of the WUSV (World Union of GSD Clubs, with voting representatives from about 77 nations):

    http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166g01-en-sv.doc

And then there is this sentence on the "Males" page:

"I don't include pedigree info. on my dogs as the MAJORITY of those interested in full pedigrees are breeders. Since I don't place my dogs with breeding rights, this info. is not necessary."

Oh really? What about the people who need a real GSD with the genes to have agility, correct attitude, courage, correct size & weight, correct colour-genetics, herding or protection or tracking instincts? Occasionally, random-chance can produce a top performer, but the VAST majority of performers descend from generations of GSDs where each individual had PROOF of his/her ability, etc. My current bỉtch was purchased so I could combine her dam's sire's genes with this dog's genes:

    ■ The FIRST thing a GOOD breeder does is refuse to use pooches that do not yet possess the certificates in

    http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/The_GSD_Source/...

    ■ The first thing a sensible buyer does is reject breeders who skip over those proofs.(Con-artists happily tell lies over the phone or face-to-face - they need to, because they don't have the CERTIFICATES that prove their claims true.)

The second thing is check the terms on the printed & signed Guarantee that a GOOD breeder supplies, stating the worthwhile compensation the buyer will receive should a pup develop any disease during the first 7-to-10 days, and any genetic disorder during the first so-many years (3 years is probably the minimum).

On the same page at least one stud appears to be a liver (banned), and she shows her ignorance by writing about a "nice show gate" - the entrance to the show grounds is unimportant, but a GSD is required to have an economical GAIT. People fit to be breeders KNOW that sort of thing.

So I didn't bother looking for the terms in their Guarantee.

    ● "There is a pup from this kennel on my town and she is beautiful, but I have a problem with them calling black GSDs "rare."

"beautiful" has NOTHING to do with GSDs - apart from the beauty that results from perfect performances.

"rare" is a favourite word of con-artists, to make gullible newbies think that" rare" is precious and distract them from the faults. In livestock, one works out what horrible behaviour (allergies, drooling, eczema, snoring, viciousness, whatever) CAUSE that rarity. 2005 is the last year I have AKC's GSD registration figures from. 6.6% were self-black, 1.4% were bi-colours. The COMBINED figure for all banned off-colours was 6.1% (0.1%livers, 0.3% blues, 5.7% self-whites).

    ● "Can anyone here recommend a good breeder in Ohio or PA?"

Unlikely to have what you want when you want it. If you mean a PAT-dog "(Pets As Therapy"), ANY healthy sane GSD that has been given the safe-&-fun (in PUP's opinion!) familiarisation experiences needed before it is 13 weeks old then spends about a year in a proper training club's weekly classes with its sensible owner should manage that. One member of my e-group works with prisoners, helping them learn how to train rescued mutts to reach the PAT-dog level.
