A woman over 50 should wear whatever skirt length she wants! by 50 you have earned the right to wear what you want when you want and you don't need anyone's permission to do anything!
A few inches above the knee to just covering the knee bone is the most flattering range of length for almost all women regardless of age.The hem cuts across the leg at it's narrowest part making your legs look long and shapely. Never wear a skirt that cuts across at the thickest part of mid-calf -that makes your legs look thick and stumpy. Don't wear a skirt that cuts across the thickest part of the thigh, you'll look mid-section heavy. Wear a skirt with some shape and isn't excessively bulky or thick with fabric at the waist. If you do wear a skirt with waist gathers then belt it -no one wants their waist to look thicker and bulkier! A tulip skirt -one with plats at the waist and narrows toward the knees is a great shape if you have a bit of poochiness in front. The pleats hide it and the silhouette makes your waist look narrower.
I'm linking to a sewing website to illustrate what I mean here are some skirt and skirt shapes that are perfect for a woman over 45:
this is a simple pleated skirt in a shape and length that's perfect in any fabric: http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/s...
This has two pleats in the front: http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/f...
This is a tulip shape with interesting pleats: http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/m...
This elegant skirt illustrates how to do a long skirt that doesn't look thick at the waist or frumpy and shapeless anywhere. It's a fit and flare that's classy, sophisticated, and chic. Perfect in wools for fall and winter or shiny evening fabrics for special occasions.
This tulip shape: http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/w... and this more fashion forward tulip shape (ignore the tie bands and look and the line drawing) http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/t... are also good choices
all the examples illustrate the just above to just below the knee length, with the exception of the longer swingier skirt.
The legs are the last part to show their age for almost all women -so don't be afraid to show them off. At 50 you aren't old -you are still in the prime of your life. Save frumpy shapeless long old lady skirts for old ladies over 70

I think anything that you dont doubt, you should wear.
But I would say that knee-length skirts, and Mid-thigh or knee-length dresses are appropriate for 50+

mini skirts look tacky on anyone over 30
mid thigh is okay if they are attractive
otherwise, stick to knee length

knee-length is the shortest or people will think you are a disgusting old lady that is trying to show off BUT if you wear a longer skirt they will think you look young its just odd that way

It really depends on the weather for me. Within the fall I like to wear longer skirts and in the wintertime I wear longer ones with my boots, but in the spring and summer I favor to wear short summer dresses.

Whatever you feel the preferred in would let him observe that you're relaxed and positive, and that is clearly a turn on for guys
