Why is my cat obsessed with water?

Ever since my cat was a kitten she has been obsessed with water. Although it's only on her terms. She will try to drink water out of a glass or knock it over, drinks out of the toilet if left open, gets in the shower with me (gets wet) not just on the edge of the tub, plays with dish water, knocks her water bowl over to play with it, and even walks outside in the rain.. Like I said its on her own terms. If I place the cat in any of these situations without her "approval" I get the basic claws out and fear to get away. She has plenty to drink or available at her disposal but she does not drink out of her bowl that much.. I thought it might be her wanting fresher water but I put that to the test and poured a glass of water. Left it out of reach for a week the Placed it where she could get it and behold she's drinking from it..

Does anyone have these issues from your cat?

actually, my cat does that all the time. He's been fascinated with water for as long as I know. He always knocks over cups, and when I'm drinking he wants a sip too. He will literally sit in the toilet. But if I give it to him, he backs away. It could just be something she's interested in. Twizzler (my boy cat) will always want to be near water, and his sister Tessa will always want food. Often if I give him tap water he will just stare at it, but if he watches me fill it from the big jug all the people get water out of, he will happily drink it. I would try to keep bathroom doors closed, cups out of reach. If he tries to knock a cup over and we catch him before he does it we pour a little of it on his head, which he hates. He hasn't been doing it as much lately. Hope this helps!

I had a cat who loved to get on top of the shower head & play in the water when I took a shower

she also went swimming in my bath water

but heaven help me if I tried to place her in water

she would not drink out of her water bowl.. she preferred to drink water out of the dog's water bowl (to the extent that I finally gave up on her even having a dedicated water bowl)

she liked to stand on the washing machine & listen to the water drain out.. always watching the drain hose as if she was finally going to get a peak at the water

she liked to watch the water go down the sink drain

she was prone to turning on the sink water (even when we were not home) to play with it.. never saw her try to play with toilet water.. but we also kept the lids down -- after a bathroom flood, we learned to turn the water on & off at the junction under the sink (at all sinks)

how do you feel when someone walks by & throws you in the pool when you have your clothes on? that is how she feels when you make the decision to put her in a situation with water instead of her deciding to be there (or do that)
