PLEASE HELP? My cat is stressing me out to the point of a mental breakdown? I can't do this anymore?

Since the day I brought him home he's been completely off the walls hyperactive insane. He has everything he needs, cat trees, toys, I play with him everyday but he never gets tired, he has big windows and a lot of space, I have treated him the most affectionate of all my animals and I love him so much and swore I'd never get rid of him but I don't think I can handle this...

I'm 17 and we got him because my therapist and I thought a cat would be a good anxiety calmer, I have severe social phobia, panic disorder, anxiety disorder, and more. I'm an anxious mess 24/7 and this past week I've been more anxious and stressed out than ever, mostly because lack of sleep.

Before I go to bed I make sure all the curtains are open for him, he has a lot of food and water, he has toys and whatever. But he won't let me sleep. I was very anxious last night because I accidentally drank caffeine so I was up until 5 am, and was woken up by 6 am. I tried so hard to sleep but he was knocking things down off shelves, getting into boxes, meowing and meowing and meowing, and eventually I just woke up crying because this happens every single night and in the state I'm in a desperately need a good sleep. I've been gaining weight and having more attacks because I haven't been sleeping. And if I do I have to wake up around 10 to 15 times to get him to stop doing something.

When I'm awake, (I'm inside all the time because I'm agorophobic) he tries to play with the plugs behind the tv and every da

Update:

y I have to figure a new method to keep him out so he doesn't get shcoked. All day this is a battle, every single thing I try doesn't work and I can't relax because I'm constantly having to get up and get him away, he gets these attacks of energy and runs around extremely fast knocking over water and scaring my dog, I can't keep him off the blinds, they're broken and he jumps on them and breaks them more and he climbs up the curtain, he's also been trying to get outside a lot which he never care

Update 2:

d for until the neighbors got these two outdoor cats who hang around the windows and drive him even crazier. He's gotten out like 3 times this week and when he's not doing his other stuff he's making a **** load of noise in the kitchen and jumping at our door scratching it and meowing, and yes he's fixed.

I am lost. I REALLY need help. He's not the cat for me but I don't want to get rid of him but I also don't want to deal with this for about 20 years. HELP ME

Update 3:

This cat is making my anxiety skyrocket. The only reasons I dont want to get rid of him is well I love him, and 2 I don't want to risk him going to a bad home. I could never forgive myself if I abandoned him AND he went to an abusive or super stressful home...they might even ler him out and he'd have to become an outdoor cat...

Update 4:

Sophieb, regarding my anxiety, I have been battling this for years. I'm not some shy kid who is afraid to go out and talk to people sometimes I am physically unable to. I have been DIAGNOSED which means I am ill and I am getting help. Don't tell me to get off the net and go play with other kids because it has never been that easy. Please don't act like you know how to cure me.

So if you have this severe anxiety issue, why aren't you on medication? There's plenty of it out there for your problem and it's being used successfully. It's one of the most treatable disorders.

You don't say how old the cat is or how long you've had him which are both really important pieces of information. If the cat is new into the home it can take weeks or months for a cat to settle in. Cats love routine and they hate change. A new home and owner is change. The cat probably has as much or more anxiety than you do if it is new:

First off, your cat is stressed by the other cats, stop opening the drapes at night so he can see them!

    "•The View Through the Window

A discussion of external stressors would not be complete without mentioning re-directed aggression, a sudden and often inexplicable phenomenon which is more common than realized, Re-directed aggression often happens when a household cat is sitting on his favorite perch, gazing out the window. Suddenly he sees a strange cat stroll through his yard. Frustrated because he can't get outside to defend his territory, the cat will suddenly attack the closest being, whether it is another resident cat or a hapless human. Dealing with this form of aggression calls for creative thinking, which includes keeping your cat away from that window or somehow barring his view, while taking steps to discourage the strange cat from further exploration in your yard. Some helpful tips for the latter can be found in this article on the Top Commercial Cat Repellants."

If your cat is less than one year old then he is a kitten and kittens go through wild stages because that's what they do and how they play and they have lots of energy. You say you play with him, how much and for how long? The two toys you need are a kitty teaser and a laser light. You play for an hour and you exhaust the cat! Then you feed the cat his night time meal. An exhausted cat with a full tummy is almost always a sleepy cat.

Look on the PetCo and PetsMart and fostersandsmith.com websites for toys that dispense treats. You put those out at night and put them away in the morning.

If you have drawstrings on blinds, put a push pin in the wall up high and drape them over the push pin so the cat doesn't get into them. It's not the cat's fault that you eat too much and gain weight. It's not the cat's fault that you drank caffeine.

Cats are very aware and sensitive to their surroundings and owners. Your anxiety could very well be making your cat have anxiety! Learn how to do deep breathing exercises and take medication and get yourself under control to help calm your cat. Your stress vibes are doing nothing to help the cat. Look on youtube.com and type in deep breathing exercises and learn how to calm yourself with self-guided meditation. It works, you only have to practice it.

mature cats and dogs lower blood pressure so your therapist was correct. But you have to get past this kitten (puppy) stage where they are bouncing off the walls with energy. What YOU need is and are lacking are B vitamins, specifically B12. Know that at a certain age you'd need to have the cat fixed, and not let the cat outdoors without you or you'll lose it. Why would you make sure the curtains are open? Are you afraid of the cat ripping them up? if so then maybe you should have blinds (with the drawstring cut at the bottom so they don't hang themself) or a pull down night blind. Ok so you caused yourself problems by drinking caffeine, maybe you should drink milk instead, but it's not the cat's fault that you drank caffeine. A cat meows a lot when they're of age and looking for a female and that's why you have them fixed.

You need a behavioral therapist to get you out of the agorophobia if you want to get out. You need to get out.

You're NEVER going to have to stop a cat from "doing something" so turn over and get some sleep and let the cat do what young cats do. So you're crying because you drank caffeine????

You have social phobia, panic disorder, anxiety disorder because you've talked yourself into that. What you should have been doing is getting off of the internet and go outdoors and play with other kids, go jog, learn to play volleyball or tennis or swim or do what other kids are doing. Why would you want to keep yourself from growing up??

I have problems like you also, my cat honestly saved me... I think you should get rid of him & find a different, calmer kitty. Try a girl, they're better for anxiety.

I swear people are making these comments who have no cats. A cat gets behind blinds whether they're down or not (so it's going to see the outside cats,) and it doesn't matter anyways because just hearing and smelling a new cat outside is enough to make a house cat go crazy.

You're only wrong in that you're still with him. He is literally dragging you down in every way and you're still begging him to stay? In my opinion it doesn't matter how long you've been together: he seems like he's lazy and using you. What loving person would leave you crying in your apartment after mooching off of you for five years emotionally and financially. You should view this something good. Do not contact him again, and if he tries to reconnect, don't give him a chance.
