Becoming a CNA/EMT before medical school?

In December I'm going to graduate from the University of Arizona with a biology degree, and then next fall I'm planning on applying to medical school. I'm not applying this fall because I haven't taken the MCAT yet, and frankly I haven't been able to study enough for it to be able to take it by the end of September. I was studying abroad in Australia from February-June and now I'm totally booked with work and two summer classes that I'm taking. Applying next fall would also give me some more time to add to my clinical experience because aside from a one week volunteer trip to Honduras I don't really have any. Do you think I should just try and volunteer at a clinic somewhere or would it be better to get certified as an a CNA/EMT and then get a job? I'd like to have some sort of cash flow coming in after I graduate so I figure maybe that way I can knock out two birds with one stone?

The medical school at the university where my daughter works as an EMT while getting her engineering PhD just loves medical school applicants with their EMT certification. Of the 60 part time EMTs they have on staff, my daughter is the only one that is not pre-med. For clinical experience nothing beats attending car wrecks on the freeway. The fire fighters pull them out but you and the paramedic have to keep them alive to get to the ER. As well as an EMT, you can sleep or study between calls.

As a CNA you have to empty bedpans. But do no life critical work. As an EMT you literally deal in life or death now and again.

It would be good to become certified CNA which will be good for your career growth at this stage. You can prepare for it easily without any hassle. Working as a CNA or nursing aide can be a great stepping stone to other more advanced health careers.

CNA is a back breaking job. EMT would be easier. You will be doing a lot of patient transports but you don't get dirty per se.
