Recommend me a laptop...?
So I'll be starting college in a few weeks and towards the end of my senior year, my laptop keeled over and kicked the bucket. It was a pretty good laptop internally, but it was really just poorly built. I got it as a Freshmen, so I only had it for a couple years, and it never failed me as far as compatibility and processing. It was just a little Toshiba Satellite c655. The problem was that it was poorly made (so as to be cheap) and it just couldn't handle daily wear and tear. By the end the whole console was coming apart, the screen hinges were all but non-existent and in the end a keyboard malfunction left it completely unusable (and my problems were far from an anomaly as per Internet forums).
So now that I'm looking for a new laptop I'm looking for something similar as far as processing (I mainly will use it for writing papers, watching YouTube, and maybe playing a few video games, but nothing too serious) but also sturdy (I will admit that while the faults in my previous laptop were common, I wasn't the most gentle with it towards the end). I'm not crazy into gaming, music production or other things that require insane specifications, just a little tinkering here and there. I also prefer PC to Mac, mostly because of price, availability of software and familiarity. I have a $1000 budget (give or take $100 or so).
Any tips? Thanks!

YEAH!!! With thousand bucks, you can get a really, REALLY nice laptop.
However, it sounds like you were tossing your previous Toshiba around the room!! I've had a small Dell notebook, now ten years old, and it's still going strong!! Never had any monitor, screen, keyboard, or charging problem!!
I would suggest you check your Sunday color ads, because right now, school is ready to start, and all the computer-selling stores are going to be putting everything on sale to make budget!!
that means a $1,000 laptop might be only $750.
Best Buy, Walmart, Staples, or other regional electronic stores, all of these will be selling everything pretty cheaply.
So don't buy a very cheap laptop, because it will probably be cheaply made, just like you've found out. I recommend you avoid HP at all costs. Personal experience has shown they send their laptops out of the factory with software and hardware issues or problems, and will deal with them thru warranty work, which means you spend hours and hours on the phone for little response. Where ever you buy, make not of any return policy, to return to store and get another laptop if yours doesn't work right off the bat.
I refuse to by anything HP, because it just seems that there's so much of it happening. It's NOT a small problem.
But the good thing is, advancing technology has made a cheaper laptop be very very good in modern times. In fact, you could probably get a nice medium priced laptop for around $500, and then go get the ChromeBook for $200 on sale!! Two for price of less than one!!

I personally use a Windows 8 Dell, and I love it. It can be slow at times. With a $1000 you could probably get a higher quality than mine, and I would recommend it. However, the ChromeBook, while small and a less advanced laptop, it is perfect for what you are doing at only $250. My school has them available, and they are like a much better MacBook. But you said videogames as well. I would recommend an alienware. They are more expensive, but that are damned amazing for video games. They have a very fast processor and a lower-end one should be available in your price range.

For your purposes, get a solid thinkpad laptop, They have excellent durability, the best keyboards you can find on a laptop for swift writing, and battery lifes of 12 hours. They have filtered cooling fans to reduce dust buildup and spill resistant keyboards and drop resistant hard drives if you have an accident too, they are absolutely college proof.
They start at $700,
