Should we let the cat out?

Just got one last month and he has been in my room whenever no one is home. is it time to let him out of the room when we are not home? my mom says its "dangerous" and i think he should but i have no real arguments...

Update:

also she's constantly comparing the room to the little box in the adoption shelters saying "at least its bigger than the small box in the adoption shelter"

It would depend on the age of the "cat" and if there are any other animals in the house.

If the cat is under about 12 weeks, then it might be better for him to stay in your room while you are gone.

If there are other animals that are not totally used to the cat, then it might also be best for him to stay in your room.

But, if he is an adult, no other animals, an you have plenty of clean litter available for him, then there should be no reason for him to be confined.

Just be sure there are no valuable items that could be knocked over, no leather furniture that may be scratched on, and it might be better to cover the base of large potted plants, or put rocks in the pots to keep him from using them for litter.

I take it you let him out when you're home. Then there's nothing wrong with letting him out when you're not home. He'll enjoy having more to explore, finding somewhere different to sleep, different windows to look out of and so on. It's not dangerous providing there's nothing nasty he might lick or nibble. Ours have always had the run of the house except our bedroom - we'd never get them off the bed otherwise!
