Is it true that cats have whiskers because it helps them move in straight lines or in small places.?
I remember hearing about this a long time ago and was wondering if it was true.

Whiskers are very sensitive and help cats to feel what is around them in the dark

I'm pretty sure no cat I've ever lived with has ever moved in a straight line, they like weaving too much. Whiskers are yet another means for cats to sense the world--a slight breeze, where edges are, etc. A cat knows that if they don't feel anything solid with their whiskers, then the rest of their body can get through just fine.

FALSE. A whiskers only help a cat judge the width/height of places they are about to enter which is why their whiskers tend to be a tad bit wider than they are. It has NO effect on their balance.
Those that saying it does affect their balance - wow. Breeds like the Sphynx, Peterbald, La Perm and Rex breeds have missing or short, twisted whiskers. You think THEY can't walk straight???

No. Its a myth - there are breeds like the Sphynx (no whiskers) and Rex cats (very short whiskers) that are fine w/o them. Doesn't measure anything nor help them in the dark.

That is their supposed purpose, but whiskers are really overrated. The hairless breeds like the Sphynx have no whiskers at all, and they are both active and athletic. The Cornish Rex is one of the most athletic breeds there is (I've had three) and their whiskers are short and curled. Doesn't hinder them in the least.

You can tell when your cat is happy by his whiskers. If you are playing with your cat and you see the whisters curl forward towards its nose in a C it's a happy cat.
