What is the difference between the County Court and the High Court in the UK?

Where would you use one over the other in a civil action?

The county court is at a lower level, and the High Court deals only with appeals and very large claims. So it depends on how much you are suing for. Over £50,000 and it will go to the High Court.

There are also some things only the High Court can do, and the main ones of those are probate and divorce. Getting probate of a will, or letters of administration in the case of someone who died without leaving one, is technically a High Court action but in practice the Probate Registry will do it all by post apart from having to swear the probate oath. And an uncontested divorce will just be dealt with formally with no need for husband or wife to attend.
