Kitten won't pee in the litterbox- help?

My husband found a kitten in the dumpster behind his work. We have raised him from a bottle and are now training him to use a litter box. I'll say he's probably around a month and a half old. He poops in the box with no trouble but he will not pee in it. Instead, he always pees either right next to the box or some random spot on the carpet. We are renting and I don't want the house ruined by cat pee. Any suggestions?

A kitten who is 6 weeks old is a tiny baby and should not be considered fully litterbox trained until about 4 1/2 to 5 months old. You have a long way to go!

You need to visit the pet supply store and get a product that is really good at removing urine scent. A cat's nose is 40 percent more sensitive than a human's so when you think there is no scent remaining, there might very well be. When a cat chooses a random spot, that spot will draw it back to go again.

A baby kitten has an attention span like that of a human baby. You can't expect a 6 week old kitten to remember where the box is all the time. Also, they have very tiny bladders and when the message hits its little brain that it has to go, that means right now! That's just like a human baby and why they wear diapers, when the baby needs to go it goes where ever it happens to be only the kitten can't wear diapers and can't always remember where the box is or get there in time if it remembers.

http://www.odoban.com/ - I like this product and buy mine at Home Depot. There is a where to buy button on the site. You can put 1/4 cup in a 28 oz spray bottle and fill the rest with water and use it to clean up messes and wipe down litterbox. Full strength for mopping etc. Febreze from the grocery store is good for final treatment to neutralize any remaining scent.

Don't forget that any cat brought in from outside MUST be blood tested for FIV and FeLV (fatal) which the mom could have gotten and transmitted to her litter. He also needs to be dewormed (all kittens and puppies need to be) so make sure when you get him to the vet for a check up these things are done. He should be neutered and microchipped at 4 to 5 months.

    Good luck!
