why/how would my kitty have torn out some of her hind toenails and what to do?

Update:

my sweet lady kitty has always been in good health, TG!, 'cause we get on so well. i can't get this. you, a cat owner, would know how torturous it is to get your cat's nails removed. so how could it be that my cat, born 2/2/2006 would scratch something so vigorously that she ended up pulling out a total of FIVE of her rear legs' toenails?

up to now, in her sad pain, she has been cheerful and a sheer pleasure.

could scratching in her box do this? could she have done it by accident when

Update 2:

what about when she recently sort of acted like a tigress (this is a nutso game we have played since she was a kitten, so i doubt it) when i tickled her belly? HOW could they have come off to the stub, where the nerve endings are??? and i'd like to know any DIY home remedies to get her out of pain and on the road to regrowing those nails. help, please!

That's common when a cat is hit by a car, or if indoors only when the nails are so long they get caught in something. There is no home remedy for pain, she needs to see a vet. And she may need antibiotics for infection as well. Call and get her seen - surely you would go to the doctor if something similar happened to you.

There's no way to find out how she ripped her nails off unless you find blood or somewhere you think she could have used. There are no hope remedies, how would you feel if someone cut of half your finger? Take her to the vet ASAP unless you also want to deal with an infection.
