Phobia of not being able to sleep?

I am terrified of not being able to sleep at night. It started when i was about 10, one night i went to bed about 8.30 and couldnt sleep until way past midnight, and the next night i was scared to go to bed incase the same thing happened again. This has been for years (im 17 now) but not as bad because I sleep really easily now. The only problem is when i travel and have to stay in a hotel room, the fact that its a different bed from my own terrifies me so much i have panick attacks, has anyone else ever experienced this? I think it may be linked to OCD but im not sure?

I've had the same problem for years. You are fortunate that your symptoms aren't worse -- such as not being able to sleep for two or three days in a row -- or four or five -- and then being terrified you won't fall asleep again, or that you'll lose it before falling sleeping again,..........I'm not sure if the problem is necessarily related to full blown OCD -- although I think obsessive thinking is involved....

Ambien works pretty well if you are going to an unfamiliar place, because then you can be sure you'll fall asleep at some point -- which knocks out some of the anxiety...

It is called ahypnophobia or insomniphobia...fear of not sleeping...sounds like yours is not true ahypnophobia because it is specific to foreign beds...xenodochiophobia is a fear of foreign hotels...your phobia could be called insomnidochiophobia but is so rare I haven't found anything about it...try taking some xanax or other anxiety meds before and during the hotel stay...
