Is an unemployed father of a child responsible to pay support in Ontario Canada?

My niece has a 4 year old with joint custody. She is currently living at home but desperately trying to better her life by going to school and working her *** off towards a nursing position. The father of her child is unemployed and still living at home with his parents. Is he still required to come to the table with a minimum support payment? She is always broke and her parents are not in the position to help her so we are trying to help with a car, clothes etc. My question is: Is the father of a child with joint custody responsible to pay minimum support, back support in any way in Ontario Canada?

Of course the father of a child is required by law to help support the child.

But that's only going to happen if your niece takes him to court and get a child support order issued by a judge. She's not going to see any money if she keeps sitting on her hands and doing nothing.

Stop giving her cars and clothes, and instead make an appointment with a lawyer for her. That is the help she needs in her situation.

Yes, of course. He chose to bring children into this world, then he is responsible to feed, clothe and put a roof over the child's head.

Of course he has to pay support, the family should get a lawyer and haul him into court.
