Annoying Male Protagonists?

I m caught up in a discussion with someone. They ve basically claimed that when male characters in books are portrayed as whiny it s because they have a good reason, but when female characters are whiny it just because they re a woman. Naturally, this angered me.

I need a list of male characters that are annoying/whiny. However, when I begin a book with an annoying lead (be it male or female), I usually give up after a few chapters and be done with it, so I don t really have a good base to go from.

So, who are some annoying male characters from novels? Also, know any female characters that were whiny/annoying, but had a good reason for it?

Holden Caulfield ('Catcher in the Rye') is definitely the whiniest little - protagonist - I have ever come across. Yes, I know he's suffering depression, probably caused by unresolved grief for his brother, which has never been tackeld by the family, but do we need to *hear* about it? I think not.

For an audult male whiner with absolutely no excuse I nominate Jimmy Porter, the lead in the play 'Look Back in Anger'.

    Boys:

-The Book of Lost Things protagonist David starts out as nothing but whiny (he gets better later) because he's a whiny kid.

-Peter Hatcher from the "fudge" series is whiny cause his little brother annoys him.

-Harry Potter is an angsty little boy in OOTP mostly because he's 15

-Thomas from the Maze Runner can be whiny sometimes.

-Gabe from "Son" the last book in the Giver quartet is really whiny cause he's a preteen.

    Girls:

-The main character from Double Identity is a girl and she's not whiny. When she is it's because no one is telling her what's going on when it's obvious something is.

-The 2 main characters from Turn about are girls and they're literally getting younger and younger until they turn to dust but they're pretty much living life to the fullest.

-Kira from Gathering Blue is a cripple, but doesn't let that bring her down

-Katniss was in a world trying to kill her, she had good reason to be whiny when she was.
