Shoes for severely swollen feet?
My sister is in need of new shoes badly but can't wear her actual size due to how bad her feet swell. She's normally a size 10, I'm a size 12 wide and she can't even fit my shoes. I know she has a lymphedema in one leg and a blood clot thats inoperable and is on water retention medicines. None of the shoes at the local stores will fit her feet. She's physically handicapped with nerve damage and a sciatic nerve that restricts her movements so she needs some kind of shoe with doesn't have strings and is easy to step into. I'd like the shoes to be a surprise, but I have no way of measuring her foot size with them so swollen. Anyone have recommendations?

Unfortunately with her foot problems she going to need expensive orthopedic shoes that are extra wide and deep and she will need to add orthodontic inserts. And unfortunately she will need to properly measured and fitted and she'll need to try them on. sorry 'bout that! These shoes are expensive but they are lifesavers for anyone with severe foot problems. My mother in law had a type of arthritis that made her joints swell up like ballons and we needed to sped several hundred dollars on one pair for her. The store where we went was a three hour drive to a specialty shop in rural Southern Ontario and if they had a webstore I would send you there in a flash, but they don't.
The brand that was recommended above all others was Drew. They have a good selection of extra wide extra deep shoes and they have more than one style: http://www.drewshoe.com/default.aspx -and they have a website! here's the exrtra wide extra deep section: http://www.drewshoe.com/double-added-depth-shoes.a... They fit her swollen feet quite well. They sell shoes for a wide range of medical conditions and have some fitting and buying advice. We also found a webstore devoted to medical needs of feet run by a doctor: http://www.healthyfeetstore.com/extradepth1.html and there's also information about fit on the site.
Many times medically prescribed footwear can be covered by health insurance depending on your coverage. She needs to go to a foot doctor and get a prescription for special footwear (yes,, it exists) and the shoes can also be deducted at tax time as a medical expense.
Search for orthopedic footwear dealers in your area using google search. Many do not have shop-able websites but they do have business listings on yelp and other places. Ask at your doctors office if they know a place that might help.
Finally, some people with severe foot problems can find comfort in the Crocs classic clogs. Yes, those ugly plastic shoes that were a huge fad several years ago. There are people who can wear nothing BUT crocs, not even expensive orthopedic shoes aren't as comfy as crocs for them. They are far less money than orthopedic shoes and they might work well for her. They are extra wide and deep by design and the foam plastic is flexible.

Trying to guess for your sister's, her guess are as good as ours! Try different sizes. Not all size-8 shoes fit the same, even from one designer.
Walk on an uncarpeted surface. This is the only way to test how shoes will feel when pounding the pavement. Shoes that are good for some, may hurt your feet. Just saying!
I bought a pair of shoes, same brand that I've walked all over Europe in 2011 very comfortable that was Made in Spain. The 2nd pair I bought in 2014, was Made in China PIKOLINOS. I wore it during my event, 90% of the day I was sitting down, 4 hours later, I was swollen & limping and took it back ASAP. In 2015, I just bought 2 Pikolinos shoes (again) from Zappo's, and I am loving both of them. Made in China! One in lavender & one in hunter green different styles.
Pikolinos: Menorca W5B-CO1527 & Pikolinos Puerto Vallarta 655-9638C1
Aquatalia Made in Italy, Delman Suede Boot Made in Spain, Clark’s are two of my favorites ALL FAVORITE OF MINE.
Wear socks, so you wouldn't get blisters!
If they hurt your feet, take them back, NO ONE SHOULD be pressured in buying shoes that didn't fit & hurts them!
Buyer beware when it comes to buying shoes or boots online, and I do not rec. using PayPal. I got screwed, took 3 years for my credit. Avoid buying shoes, on sale that states: "Final Sale No returns."
I bought 2 pair of shoes, $700 worth @ Zappos, where they have free shipping & free returns. I am a 5 1/2, so I bought a size 6. Returned them. Ordered a 5, too small. I saved $700.
I went to Nordstrom's, they're having shoe sales. Found 2 shoes, both less than $300. Both were rated as 'best comfortable shoes for walking'. BTW: I wore one of the boots for 4 hours, and I didn't even do that much walking, mostly standing on the same spot, sat 90% of the day. . . . and I was already limping. I took it back the following day! I found the perfect boots, from Piperline, finally after 4 tries! I found a second pair @ Clark's, just next door to our hotel room in Spain, most comfortable boots in the world! I just bought 2 more in Florence (Italy) Outlet store, and I felt like walking on air!
My son bought a pair of Nike beach sandals. They didn't come in his size, so he bought the one larger. They weren't sold in stores! He was walking around sandals too big, only because he didn't want to pay for return shipping and re-stocking fees.
Example from YA! member: "Well, I bought these dr marten boots and as we all know that European footwear is sized different from American shoe sizing they kinda hurt my feet. They cost too much to not wear them… . . . However at work in the toilet after a couple of hours my socks were BLEEDING I stupidly didn't wear the provided socks underneath as I wasn't sure if they would cover or feel/fit right over the top of black socks because I was in a rush.. it did work after a few days but the skin is completely ripped off and red and extremely painful without plasters or walking around in shoes limping like I have no feet and looking dumb pushing my feet to the toe. (which makes the rubbing worse).”
“The reality is I have a closet full of shoes that I don’t wear because they are not comfortable, and I am not going to be hobbling between meetings. There’s nothing that ruins an entrance like somebody who is uncomfortable in their shoes. It is important and critical that my shoes be incredibly comfortable. It’s not the top adjective I use to describe them, but I have walked many a construction site in my stilettos. And, if you do so, you better be able to walk without too much drama around it.”
