Phd in a brand new subject?

Is it possible to pursue a Phd in a brand new subject that only you know yourself.

Just a general question asking for a friend, He is wondering if universities accommodate Phds in topics not yet explored?

For example imagine we live in a time period, where no one eveb believes in the existence of microorganisms, and you want to study about E-coli and examine their colony s shape and size.

How do you even start to contact professors to find a supervisor?

They will ask you what you are interested but you can t tell them because no one has ever seen or even believes in what you propose.

Any professional guidance will be appreciated

Thanks

In other words, you want a doctorate for puttering around. You need an advisor who knows more about the general field than you do. Eventually, you will know more about the specific field than anyone in the world but you are going to have to relate your work to a known field.
