Have a talk with him and tell him that you appreciate that he thought of you but you'd prefer something more romantic. And then give him a list of things you'd prefer to get. We men aren't good at knowing what our partners would like the most.

I would thank him and explain that tho I love the new toaster and the effort he put into getting it, in the future I'd really like something more personal and more Valentine like.
