Why are cats so long & why do they get longer when they are relaxed. Do they get uncomfortable being so long?

A cat's skeleton is different from ours. They're much more flexible because their bones are not as tightly connected together as ours. This is how they squeeze through tight spaces, and how they can lick their own butts. This is why when you pick up a cat under its arms, it stretches, and it stretches longer when it's relaxed.

    In addition to Mr's answer

the long, loose spine acts as a sort of spring, improving leaping distance

and allows them to twist in mid-air so that they land on their feet.
