  • Heating In a Glass Enclosure For a Snake?

I have recently brought home a Children's python and would like some opinions on heating his three foot glass enclosure (two feet high) as I know all-glass enclosures suffer from heat loss.

Currently it's heated with two ceramic bulbs (on a thermostat) on top of the screen mesh lid. The back has a Styrofoam background. Coco peat substrate.

I'm going to cover much of the lid with a piece of Styrofoam. Would covering the sides with a Styrofoam background (or something else) help too?

As for the heat source, are the two ceramic bulbs alright or would I be better off having something like a ceramic bulb and a heat mat on the bottom (if I do this, I can't run them on the same thermostat, correct?)?

Thanks for your answers and your patience with this newbie!

  • How Do I Apply Finish Spray To Shrink Plastic Jewelry?

A question for you crafty people (i.e. people who hand-make things, but cunning people are also welcome to answer): I bought a spray can of Krylon Crystal Clear acrylic coating to seal my shrink plastic jewelry pieces and it's great because it doesn't make the ink run or leave uneven brush marks.

I sprayed it on my test pieces and have a few problems:

    1) It dries with what I'd call a crappy extreme orange peel finish instead of a smooth surface. I put it on quite liberally though, am I only suppose to put a thin coat on?

    2) The pieces stick to the baking paper I lay down underneath while they dry. Maybe this can just be fixed by moving them onto fresh paper after spraying?

    3) How do I prevent the hole in the plastic piece filling up with the spray stuff?

Sorry if this stuff is obvious, I am a complete newbie to this. Thanks!

  • 3D Lizard Drawing: How Can I Improve?

So this is my first attempt at 3D modeling. I'm using a combination of 3D and 2D painting to create a picture. Anyway, since it's my first try at this technique, I would love some feedback, how you think it could be improved, etc.

Thanks so much, here's the picture: http://i.imgur.com/DYgIh3R.jpg?1

  • Question About a New Pet Parrot Tshirt Store?

Hello! I'm opening up an online store selling pet bird related tshirts, bags, etc. Here's a preview of some of the designs: http://www.clara-hollins.com/tshirt_preview_w.jpg

Here's my question: How much would you be willing to pay for shirts like these?

This is mostly for fun and I want to try and keep costs low (difficult when printing, etc is outsourced). So it's really helpful to get an idea of what people would actually pay. Thank you so much!

  • Lorikeet Died, Question and Tribute Video?

A month ago one of my lorikeets passed away, only 3 years old. I've been doing alright but I feel so sick every time I think about her. How do you cope? My other lorikeet was bonded to her and while he's very tame, I would like to get him another bird friend. But at the same time I can't bring myself to buy more birds for now... What if they all die young in my care? How did you cope with the loss of a pet? :(

Also, I made a video tribute about her which did help somewhat, I would really appreciate it if people took a few minutes to check it out, thank you so much: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7c_gtNNq8A

Thanks for your help. Would like to hear your experiences.

  • Can You Reccomend Me An Anime With The Following Criteria?

I need some new anime to watch! What can you reccomend that fits into the following:

    * Most important: must have an amazing storyline.

    * Good animation, no super budget stuff

    * Good music (more a bonus)

    * I would prefer no anime that has hundreds of episodes, mostly because the animation is generally poorer and there are too many filler episodes

Anime I already love includes Wolf's Rain, FMA, Darker Than Black, Death Note, Fruits Basket, Samurai Champloo and Escaflowne. Thanks so much!

  • Which Book Cover Should I Pick For My New Bird Training Book?

I held a contest to design a book cover for my bird training book and ended with a whopping 179 entries. Here are the best designs from the 4 finalists. Which one do you think I should pick? I'm really stuck on which one to choose and the best people to ask are those who keep birds. Thanks so much! http://99designs.com.au/book-cover-design/vote-sin...

  • Dog Killed Cat? Now Dog Will Be Killed?

Hey guys, I need some advice. :\

Someone I know had a desexed staffy (less than a year old), a small dog and two cats. They all got along until a week ago the staffy killed one of the cats. Understandably, the family is very upset. They shunned the staffy for a few days to "teach him a lesson". Of course the staffy would have no concept of what he's suppose to be "learning" but the family did need some time.

Now, I'm no dog expert, birds are my forte. But is it normal for dogs to kill cats? Dogs are predatory animals so I'm suspecting it's natural behaviour and high prey drive. Or not? Should this dog see a good dog behaviourist? Should the family change their environment so that it doesn't happen again and accept that he was just being a dog?

The other issue is the staffy keeps jumping the fence and getting out. They've extended the fence but it's still happening. Apparently if he gets out one more time, they are taking him to the pound to get PTS for "punishment for killing the cat". This sounds ridiculous to me and heartbreaking. I have met this dog many times and he is very friendly towards people.

    What to do?

  • What Is A Backyard Breeder?

How do you define a "backyard breeder" (considered on the same level as puppy mills). Is someone whose single pet dog got out and got itself pregnant once considered a backyard breeder?

    Thanks!

  • Do You Have Any Questions About Bird Training?

I have a question about your questions! I wrote a bird training book a few months back. Currently I am working on version 2 to make it bigger and better and deal with extra questions. The two main ways it will be changing is it will be more systematic and entertaining to read.

So I ask you all now: is there something about bird training that confuses you or something you particularly want to know? What do you want to see in a bird training home study course? Thank you, your answer is very helpful!

  • Baby Bird Not Eating? Is This Normal?

Two days ago I was given a baby Indian Mynah fledgling, here's a photo I took this morning: http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/419...

I've been feeding him Wombaroo Insectivore Rearing Mix which is a high protein formula, mixed with a little bit of warm water and rolled into balls. Yesterday he ate heaps.

Today it is now 11:00am and he hasn't really been interested in eating. I managed to give him two mouthfuls (not enough to fill him up) but otherwise he hasn't been gaping. Instead he's been running around chirping, exploring, jumping, flapping, seeing how high he can climb up me. So lots of energy, but he hasn't been opening his mouth for food. Is this normal? Should I just wait until he's hungrier or do I need to force feed him?

Any tips and advice would be wonderful, thank you!

  • How Can I Improve My Drawing (Dragon)?

I haven't drawn for ages and am trying to get back into it. Here's some line art I drew today of a dragon: http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/430...

He's meant to be lying on a branch in this drawing, wings slightly folded and at ease. If you have any comments or constructive criticism before I start colouring, it would be really helpful! Drawing this pose was difficult for me. >__>

Thank you very much for your help. :)

  • Why Do People Here Think Internet Jobs Are A Scam?

I see a lot of skepticism here every time someone asks if it is possible to make money at home from the Internet. I'm just wondering, why is this? Do you have any experience making money from home? Yes, there are a lot of scams out there, but how does that make working from home not real?

I make a living working on the Internet from home. I literally go to bed or go out with friends, come home or wake up and find I've made money. It's a set and forget kind of deal. I sell from my own websites and do not use any expert skills. So yes, it is possible in my opinion.

Here's what I think the real scam is: Get rich quick schemes. People fail usually not because they've fallen for a scam, but because they think that you can push a magic button and become a millionaire. It takes WORK, just like a business does. I put a lot of effort into the initial set up process, but after that it runs on its own.

Then you have things like surveys, stuffing envelopes, etc which while possible to make something, no way will you make a living and in my opinion is not worth the time or effort.

So I am open to hear from everyone... do you think making money on the Internet is a scam? Really love to hear your opinions, thank you! :)

  • What Should I Name My Cockatiel (Between Two Names)?

I've adopted a male whiteface pearl cockatiel (looks similar to this bird here: http://www.cockatielsplusparrots.com/sitebuilder/i... ). He already talks and whistles and is semi tame so we're going to work on that.

    Anyway, name is between:

    Anakin OR

    Rubix

Which do you prefer? Can't decide. Thanks! :)

  • Have You Ever Solved A Problem With Your Pet Bird Like Biting, Screaming, Etc?

I'm currently putting a book together on parrot care and behaviour training (this includes cockatiels, budgies, etc). I would like to include real examples of bird owners solving a behaviour problem. Whether your bird was screaming, biting, feather plucking, toilet trained, etc.

If you would like to be part of the book (and get a free digital copy when it's done), please share your story here (or email it to me). Would love to know how you've solved your bird's problems, thanks!

(Please also include your name (can be just your first name or an alias if you choose) and what species your bird is. Note that I'm not including stories that use punishment involving hitting birds, spraying with water, etc).

    Thanks! :)

  • Ecommerce Store Not Making Sales?

Hi all! I set up my first ecommerce store (selling physical products) and on launch in 24 hours I got 170 targeted visitors via buyer keywords.

However I haven't had a single sale. I would have expected a minimum of one or two sales from that.

I did get one email from someone simply saying they wanted to buy a handbag, so I suspect that I don't have enough big calls to action or buy buttons. Maybe it's not clear enough.

I also offer free shipping, 90 day money back guarantee and a free gift for those who spend over a certain amount. Plus up to 60% off retail price on items. All this is pretty clear on the front page.

Does anyone here have any general tips for converting visitors into buyers in an online store? Or any reccomended guides I can buy on the topic? Thank you very much for your help!
