  • Why is my computer monitor flashing colors?

My computer screen looks just fine when I boot up and get on the internet. Within a few minutes it starts to flash weird colors, then settles on blues and yellow-green. After looking at the blue-yellow-screen for a while, I look away and everything in the room looks redish! My cones and rods are freeking out! Is it my monitor? Video card? I've done all kinds of system tests and everything is "OK". What could be wrong and is there a cheap fix?

  • Phantom vibrations?

If you wear your cell phone in the same place all the time and you frequently have it on 'vibrate' mode, do you sometimes feel a vibration when the cell phone is NOT in there?

Weird. I do. Just curious of anyone else has experienced this.

  • Is it crazy to even think about changing career....?

I'm nearing 60 and have been in my current career for 18 years (insurance and financial services). Frankly, I'm bored.

I have a number of things that I would love to do, but my overdeveloped sense of responsibility says that it would be foolish and financially disastrous.

Any thoughts on what I should do, who I should talk to, agencies, "life coach", ways to evaluate whether one path would be better than another? Have you done anything like this and succeeded? If you have, how did you pull it off? How would you advise others in this situation?

NOTE: I have a sterling credit rating, but have only saved about $50,000 in a retirement account. I have a low-interest mortgage of about $200,000 on a home valued at around $800,000. Married, children are married and financially independent. Wife is chronically ill but stable and reasonably active. I am bi-lingual English Spanish.

  • Can you successfully change your career at 60?

Or, is it best to keep doing what you are doing until you simply can't do it anymore?

  • What do you think of the new Justin (Ugly Betty)?

I don't think it works on at least two levels: 1) he's not good at faking 'macho', and 2) the plot line doesn't make sense - after all, his dad was finally accepting him for what he really was: a very talented, intelligent, and entertaining young man. I'm not sure where it's going but they need to bring back the real Justin. He's much more interesting than "James Dean". But, what do you think?

  • Miley Cyrus - do you think I have this right?

I think this young woman has real talent and will go far as long as she doesn't follow the path of Spears and Lohan. I think her appeal is that she is a cross between Stevie Nicks and Avril Lavigne. She has the range of Stevie and can sing at a tenor or contralto level, as well as hit the higher notes. But, she also has the precision and control of Avril. I think a true star is being born. What do you think?

  • Anyone want to join my boycott?

I wish I could push a button that would allow me to get a customer service rep that SPOKE English! I'm getting fed up with trying to understand non-native English speakers that read from a script. In fact, I've committed to cease patronizing or buying from those companies that have outsourced their customer service to such agencies. I've closed a bank account and returned two pieces of electronic equipment over the matter. Anyone else with me on this?

  • Spyware remover: who needs it?

I've always had spyware remover on my computers and used it regularly, but I've discovered that if I go to "Internet Options" and delete all cookies, browsing history, etc. ("delete all" and check the box "Also, delete files and settings stored as add-ons") that running spyware remover after that produces no "bugs" of any kind. So, why would you need spyware remover if deleting everything does the job in a 10th of the time it takes for spyware removers to do it?

  • Used to get it, why can't he now?

My associate is not getting important messages from a professional group. He uses Yahoo Mail because he has a Yahoo website. Until about two months ago, he was getting all of those messages, but then, nothing!

The email being sent out is to about 50 local professionals. Virtually all of them reported getting the notices being sent out. Just my associate is not getting them. At first we thought it might have been a spam problem where any bulk mailings over a certain number were blocked. But, I had the administrator resend a single message to my associate, and he didn't get that, either..

Other facts: He's using IE 7, Windows XP Professional, and Outlook 2003.

  • Can you help me out with this?

My wife has a chronic illness (Secondary Addison's Disease) and must take 12 - 15 medications per day. Essentially, her endocrine system is not functioning and she has to replace virtually everything the endocrine system would otherwise provide to her body. A couple of those medications have caused her to gain about 40 extra pounds...and the doctors say that she's probably going to keep gaining. She is very depressed about that (she takes medication for depression, too. It's helping.) She keeps running herself into the ground saying, "I'm a big fat pig!"

I feel completely useless in that I can't say or do anything to make her feel better about herself. She has always had a great body and never had to worry about her weight. Now, she has no control over it whatsoever. She just keeps gaining. I tell her that I love her, I help around the house as much as I can, tell her she's still beautiful, etc., but nothing seems to help. What can I do or say to boost her morale?

  • Can you assist with search for 'minimal life'?

About 10 years ago, I saw a book about 'minimal living'...that is, minimal shelter, clothing, and food and requiring very little money to just plain live in our hectic society. I've searched Google, Amazon, and other bookstores and can't find much of anything about that subject. But, I know that there are people who are interested in such things. I'm very interested in living a less complicated and costly lifestyle. Can you suggest any titles for study? Thanks!!

  • Canine teeth cleaning really necessary?

Our vet consistently recommends that our beagle get her teeth cleaned. She gives several reasons for this, including the possibility that without doing so, our dog might get kidney diseases, heart problems, etc. The procedure costs about $300. What gives? I've had lots of dogs in the past and they all lived to ripe, old ages without having their teeth cleaned - just chew toys and the standard chewing treats. Is this really necessary or just 'recommended'?

  • Would you change...?

...your insurance company because you thought their advertising was exceptionally cool? Few would deny that the Geico ads are clever, especially the one with the caveman at the airport backed by the snappy music "Remind Me" by Royksopp. But, is that enough to cause people (you?) to pick up the phone and move your account? Inquiring minds want to know!

  • Bad dreams about the VA Tech event?

Anyone having bad dreams about this horific massacre? Last night I dreamed that someone was sneaking up on a women and I yelled at her to "get down", pushed her to safety, then hammered the assailant with two punches. I woke up instantly having just punched out the wall next to my bed and ended up with two very sore sets of knuckles. I gotta stop watching so much news on TV. How about you? Any subconscious reaction to this incident?
