Is it me or is it both funny and serious that the U.S. terrorism watch list recently contained 400,000 people?
First, it's funny because there's no way the government can properly investigate that many people. Second, it's serious because the few people who are actually terrorists aren't being properly investigated.
What do you think?
8 AnswersCurrent Events1 decade agoWhat about first spouses?
Of course, we must focus on the actual candidates, but what about their spouses?
Obviously, Clinton has Bill. It's unprecented for a former president to be the spouse of a new president. Not sure what I think of that...
I don't have a particularly favorable opinion of McCain's wife. She seems rather secretive and unpleasant. I'm not sure she would be a good public asset for McCain if he was elected.
Obama's wife is ok. She would eventually get the hang of public speaking, I think, but she would still look rather dull compared to her husband's excellent public speaking abilities.
I know that Edwards is out of the race, but I am most impressed with his wife. There were times early in the campaign when I thought she should be running instead of him.
6 AnswersElections1 decade agoChallenge #1: Can you say something good about our political candidates?
The political discourse in the United States is incredibly negative, I think, because we have a twisted view with regard to argumentation. Let's try the opposite:
Clinton - An ambitious and talented politician who would make a fantastic national and world leader. She would be a very strong and confident presence if she were elected president.
McCain - He is his own man and would likely be a transformational figure for the GOP. His moderate views are exactly what that party needs. This would become far more apparent if her were elected president.
Obama - A brilliant rhetorician with an overwhelming charm that transcends mere leadership. Similar to McCain, he would be a transformational for the Democratic party.
I am proud of all three of our candidates. It's been a long time since we've had such a great group of people asking us to let them lead us.
14 AnswersElections1 decade agoRace and Gender and Democrats?
Are Democrats incapable of civility when it comes to race and gender? As I age, I am drawn further away from the Democratic Party; I am drawn away from the Republican Party on basic principles. But where does this leave us Independents? The Republican Party wants us to fear a foreign invader and the Democratic Party apparently wants us to fear each other.
Do you think any of the presidential candidates will be transformational? That is, will either of them unite the country so that it can heal economically, socially, and internationally?

2 AnswersMedia & Journalism1 decade agoAre race and gender a factor in the Democratic nomination?
According to this article it is: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080206/ap_on_el_pr/de...
I find this article entirely mistitled. The article cites that 7 in 10 Democratic voters would be happy with Clinton and 7 in 10 would be happy with Obama. Further, 1 in 10 whites say race is an issue in choosing candidate and 3 in 10 blacks say the same. Kinda looks like race and gender DON'T matter to Democrats.
I'm impressed with both. My bias against Clinton is that we've already had a Clinton era, and I don't feel her approaches to issues (she and Obama are nearly identical on most issues) will be fresh. I believe that she will try to bring us back to the safe 1990s. Obama will not. Race and gender are irrelevant.
13 AnswersElections1 decade agoWhat do you think of Kerry's endorsement of Obama?
I found Kerry's endorsement somewhat interesting. It's clear that Kerry was never a populist like Edwards; those two men had serious differences when Kerry was running for president. And Clinton will always have her husband's legacy, for good or ill, hovering over her.
Obama appears to something "new" to the Democratic race. His racial profile will likely never play a public significance but rather remain within the silence of the private conversations of those opposed to a black president. His message remains astoundingly vague and largely mimics Clinton's agenda.
How does Kerry's endorsement of Obama affect his campaign?
5 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWhat makes Barack Obama so attractive as a candidate?
A recent NPR story suggests that women find authority in low, powerful male voices: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story...
Obama has this quality of speech in spades. Does he attract people because he can make even the simplest of utterances sound fantastic? When the world imagines a leader of the free world -- the president of the United States -- can they listen to him/her better if he/she rules with a well-trained voice?
I believe that much of Obama's appeal is vocal. He is a fantastic speaker, an intelligent, cogent, and confident man who seems more like a leader and less like a figurehead appointed by a committee. What are your thoughts?

1 AnswerBooks & Authors1 decade agoHow could Hawaii have beaten?
I think they should have run the ball on every other first and second down, mixed it up. Georgia watched Hawaii's tapes and thought that Colt could only quarterback a passing game. Hawaii got smeared because the coaching staff stubborningly insisted on passing. What do you think?
18 AnswersFootball (American)1 decade agoI haven't read philosophy since college, and I would like to start over again. Can you help?
Please don't say I should just read the Bible. I don't want to start there. Please don't say "read the Greeks" without pointing to a particular philosopher, particular work, and why I should start there.
Thus, I would like to hear your suggestions about your favorite philosopher AS WELL AS your favorite philosophical book, letter, tract, etc.
Note: Short, undetailed answers will likely be ignored.
