  • Easement gate dispute?

We own property that has an easement through our neighbors parcel. Years ago (5-8) we put up a gate to stop teens from thinking our property was a good place to go neck. Our neighbor was aware of it, and showed no interest in what we were doing. There is no lock on the gate. Today, we got a letter from his lawyer demanding that we take it down. Saying it s illegal. All we can figure is that he s mad about something else. I m aware that it s his land, that s not my question. What I need to know is how exactly should we proceed?

  • Which loan should be first on insurance?

The lender on my second mortgage (Wells Fargo) is insisting they should be listed as the first lien holder over the actual first mortgage bank on my homeowners insurance. This doesn t seem correct to me?

  • Married/Jointly or Married/Separately?

My husband made $63000 last year, I started a new part-time job and made only $6069. No federal was taken out of my check. When I add my income to our joint form, we go from receiving a refund, to paying quite a bit. When I start filling out a form on my own, it says I won't have to pay taxes. Should we file married/separately, or married/jointly?

  • Home insurance settlement taxes?

I already know that I will owe no taxes on the home insurance settlement I received. But from my understanding, the bank alerts the IRS when I make a large deposit to my bank account. Therefore, the IRS knows I banked over $20k in one lump last year. How do THEY know it's an insurance settlement? I've searched the internet, and can't find an answer. I'm using TaxAct online for my taxes this year, and so far they haven't asked me anything pertaining to this.

  • Our neighbor accidentally set our acreage on fire, insurance?

No structures were damaged, but an acre of our land is now charred, the land has been torn up from fire crews, and at least 6 (native, not planted) trees are gone. Our property value went down substantially in a matter of hours. Will his/our homeowners insurance do anything to reimburse us for this?

  • Red sore under bandage, no idea what it could be?

A child I know broke a finger over a month ago. After the cast came off, the doctor said he should keep that finger bandaged to it's neighbor finger as a sort of splint. Everything was fine, until a few days ago. Several red areas showed up along the fingers, under the temporary bandages. The sores barely hurt, don't itch, aren't open, and a few are going away after the parents began using gauze under the sports tape(which the doctor had never mentioned doing). There are still two left, any idea what this could be? The doctor is over an hour away, and the parents aren't worried, just curious.

  • Should a person used to a basic cell phone get an iPhone?

I have the opportunity, through Verizon to get a "free" iPhone 4 with a 2 year contract. I already planned on getting a two year contract, as Verizon is the only carrier that works well in my area. I need a new phone, and the offer of an iPhone is tempting. The only cost to me would be an extra $10 a month for switching from a basic phone to a smart phone.

My real question is: Will I find enough use for it to justify the $10 a month? I don't use social networking. I text, and I would use the web while shopping. I use and enjoy apps on my android tablet. But I'm not a 20 year-old hipster, I'm a 30 something mom. Is an iPhone for me?

  • How will a Visa card protect me (vacation rental)?

I will be booking a rental through VBRO today. I'm using a Visa card. I know that Visa protects me from fraudulent charges, but will they cover me if the rental is an absolute dump when I arrive? I have checked the owners in every way I can, I have researched Visa, but all I can find are people saying credit cards protect you with vacation rentals. No real explanation on HOW they protect you.

  • Fridge sounds like it's turning on twice?

It will turn on and run for awhile and then it makes a tiny clicking sound, whirs and turns on again even though it's already running.

The temp is good, the freezer works as usual. But I have no idea what is going on?

  • Should I close a low interest credit card with an annual fee?

We've had this Bank of America card for 9 years and it is our oldest card except for a store card that we've had for 11 years(and never use). We have a great credit score and little debt.

The BOA card has a 6.9 interest rate. They began charging us a $45- annual fee 2 years ago for NO reason. They also removed the benefits the card originally came with (travel protection etc.)

Should we threaten to close the card if they don't remove the annual fee? Or is the low interest rate worth keeping it, even though we rarely use the card? We don't want to hurt our credit score, but we feel like we shouldn't be paying $45- a year.

  • Could a large private company be sold without the public knowing?

A company that people in my family work for is part a big rumor going around. This is a multi billion dollar company with thousands of employees. The rumor is that an overseas company bought it out and but they are keeping it quiet (for what reason?). The rumor also goes on to say that half the jobs in our area will disappear (these aren't manufacturing jobs).

Can a large, privately held company be sold with absolutely nobody knowing it? Not even the media?

  • Letting my child make a mistake?

I've tend to fix things for my child instead of allowing them to make mistakes/suffer consequences. The teacher this year is very strict and will punish my child with recess detention if they forget to bring their reading book in....well guess what was left in the car today (even after being reminded to take it)?

I'm sitting here wallowing in mom guilt. I know I should allow my child to take the consequence for not bringing the book in, but it's so hard not to drive the ten miles and fix it by bringing in the book.

I know this isn't a big problem, but it's a first for me.

  • Squeaking sound Toyota Camry, not the belts.?

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry with 85,000 miles. Runs great. The car developed a squeaking sound that gets louder as the car warms up. I had the belts replaced and it still squeaks. The mechanics told me they didn't know what it was. Any ideas?

  • Signing Mom up for internet, will 100GB be enough?

The company she has to go through has a 100GB per month usage allowance. She surfs the web, does email, downloads 3-5 songs a month and watches tv shows on Hulu several times a week. She isn't a gamer ;-) Will 100GB be enough for her?

  • How can my friend avoid alimony?

OK, I was asked to find information online and haven't been able to. If a couple is divorcing and he didn't work much outside the home, does she have to pay alimony to him if she allows almost all assets to go to him? Isn't there something called "uneven division of property"?
