  • Scorpion observing in Sonora Desert?

My son and I are vacationing in the Sonora Desert near Phoenix, and he is interested in observing arachnid life here (which is evidently quite diverse)-Does anyone know the best method of finding the different species, and what time, area, microhabitat we should look for? Thank you very much

  • What is the raised area around a large jacuzzi called?

I need two words to describe areas in the house (we are selling and need to advertise). One-the area in front of a fireplace on the floor (not the hearth). The carpet was burned by embers, so I replaced that portion with stone tiles. Is there a special name for the floor in front of a fireplace?

And the second- we have a large 2-person jacuzzi tub. The tub is not sunken, but surrounding it is a raised area (raised to the level of the top of the tub), tiled in shiny indigo. It a place to sit while drying off, or sit and talk to someone in the tub...it makes the tub look sunken, since this raised area is about 3-4 feet out from the tub. Is there a special name for this raised and tiled area?

Thank you so much if you can help- Besides the points, I'll be more than happy to answer any question you have on medical or scientific matters!

  • Wallpaper Border-Can you put new border over old?

Can you put new wallpaper border over old, or do you have to remove the old border first? Also, do we have to be careful not to paint over the old border before we put the new up? Thanks.

  • I know next to nothing about the Y answers site itself-How do I communicate with the staff of Y answers?

I would like to suggest debate forums, to clear out some of the repetitive arguments that seem to go nowhere-A place where arguments and counter-arguments could be posted- For people who are confused about controversial issues, I think it would be the most educational and informative way of getting info across-and that is after all one major purpose of this site.

  • Y Answers debate forum?

There are a few subjects that are hotly debated here, such as evolution vs. creation- Instead of everyone burning off time repeating arguments, would it be nice to have a (rational and civil) debate here where people could respond to the latest post? This would go not only for the stated debate topic, but any other very commonly asked, controversial, subject. Or...does this already exist?

  • Question about superheroes and sciencific possibility?

If someone were to write a story about a superhero that was scientifically reasonable given, say, 20 years of advances in materials science, biophysics, etc-would that be interesting? Would detailed descriptions (as part of the story and plot) of the "superpowers" and how they came about, that were fairly detailed and scientifically plausible, be interesting to those of you who like superhero/villian literature? Assume a scientist actually wrote it using best-guess extrapolation.

  • Modern Human Evolution? How did all populations of humans advance at the same time?

For approximately 150-200,000 years, humans essentially lived like very smart animals, then fairly suddenly, about 10,000 years ago, we all seemed to have discovered agriculture and "civilization"..a few thousand years later we were all writing. I have never seen a decent, logical explanation for how all the populations of the Earth took this "great leap forward" at the same time-After 150-200,000 years, suddenly within about 1% of that time frame, there are cities everywhere from the Middle East, to China, to North and South America? Writing starting independently everywhere? For me, this is the most mysterious event in all of history-any ideas? (I dont really subscribe to the Space Odyssey alien intervention theory...)

  • Are housecats considered social or non-social animals?

I don't believe they live in packs in the wild, and yet they exhibit a great deal of social behaviour...From what I have studied, relatively few animals make decent pets unless they are social (i.e. live together in the wild). Anyone know this?

  • Biological contact between North and South America causing massive extinction?

I have read that all life in South America was similar to Australia-and that upon physical contact, the North American animals invaded South America and out-competed the native animals- Are there any animals left from this, like possums? Anyone? Calmecita?

  • Could you make proton star material using deuterium?

If one where to strip the electrons from, for example, hydrogen or deuterium (which is easy enough) and then cooled it to freezing, what would be the resultant solid material? Pure protons-but I cant imagine the physical properties of such a thing. One would imagine, since there is so much hydrogen plasma (H+) and hydrogen oceans on gas giants, that this may occur..

  • "Biochemistry" of alien silicon creatures?

Silicon is much like carbon chemically, but the Si-O bond is much stronger than the C-O bond, and that is thought to result in reduced possibility that silicon creature would exist. Are there conditions under which the stronger Si-O and Si-H bonds would be as easily broken and organic chemicals, such as high heat? This is another science fiction-like question. Thanks
