  • Here's a simple one, so speed counts?

Four indentical circular disks, having a radius R, are placed on a plane table so that each disk is touching two others. The centers of the disks are the corners of a square. What is the area of the table, in terms of R, exposed between the 4 disks? Evaluate the area for R = 7.5cm. (No, this is not homework. I graduated years ago.)

  • A problem of cubes?

A rectangular structure is composed of unit cubes. Its dimensions are 11 by 17 by 23. How many cubes are contained within the structure?

  • A serious question, for ladies only please?

Many woman complain about a shortage of truly romantic guys. My question is: what do you think makes you worth romancing?

  • Just a slightly cynical/humorous comment?

Atheists, Theists and even Agnostics are often APES - Arrogant-Presumptuous

-Evil-Stupid, while the worst we can really say about our genetic cousins the Apes is they are a bit stupid, but they are not really much dumber than us. (A couple of mountain gorillas chewing on a piece of grass in the Congo vs. men butchering each other in the name of God and money/oil, in Baghdad, and around the world). This doesn't say anything about God, but it says a lot about man.

  • A question (for the mathematically minded) concerning the existence of God?

Those who are fairly gifted mathematically are often more philosophically objective. I am not interested in professions of "faith". What I am looking for is original and creative 'thoughts' (not references) about the existence of "God". Humor is ok but I'd prefer slightly more seriously philosophical reasonings.

  • Given the natural integers 1,2,3,....see below?

and given a specific set of odd primes Sp = {3,5,7,11...Pz} (note Pz could be 3) and the rule that if 2x+1 is divisible by a odd prime p belonging to Sp then the integers x and x+1 are discarded, how would one most effectively compute the next integer that would not be discarded?

For example let the set of primes Sp={3,5} then 1+2 = 3 and so 1 and 2 are discarded; 2+3 = 5 and so 2 and 3 are discarded; but 3+4 = 7 and 7 does not belong to Sp so 4 is not discarded. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance, and I will not let this question go to voting since the voting system is so flawed.

  • How many of you agree with me....?

I think the 10 point best answer and voting system stink!

I get my share of best answers, but consider the following:

A question gets 6 answers, 3 of which are short and don't really address the question. The other 3 are well thought out and took some time, but maybe 1 is slightly better. Why not have it setup so I can give 10 points for best and maybe 7 to another and 5 to another? This would lead to a much fairer distribution of points and people who didn't get best answer would realize their answer was still appreciated. It's not as if the Federal Reserve will be depleted by dishing out more points. U don't need to send email notification. The other problem is the voting system is a failure and 65% of questions go to a vote. Many questions in voting receive hardly any votes(and some people unjustly vote for themselves) with some absurd results. Something needs to be done to encourage question posers to resolve it themselves. I could go on, not much space left. Your views? Thx!

  • It seems to me the quality of the questions on here has been deteriorating somewhat. What do you think?

Questioners: why can't you take the time to make sure your questions are well worded and complete? People should not have to guess what the question is. Also, if you are careless in your wording, spelling and details, it would seem to me that you are likely to be careless and unappreciative in your evaluation of the answers you receive. I checked the stats and about 65% of all questions go to a vote. There are a few reasons for this but it is mainly the fault of those who ask the questions. Most people try to give quality answers and they deserve some consideration. And if you are asking a mathematical question, make sure the 'brackets' are where they should be. Also, when you ask a question, questions which are similar, and which have already been asked, are shown. So quit asking about "proofs" of 1=2. And, if I see the "where is the missing (or extra) $" question, one more time, I think I'll puke on my keyboard. So Askers, show some respect. Have a good day.

  • What makes you think your opinions concerning God are worth voicing? Before you answer, pls read all!?

To theists and atheists: For various reasons (convincing to you) you have come to hold a particular belief. Let me explain something relevant from mathematics. There are number function "conjectures" in mathematics known to be true for every computer tested number as well as proved to be more likely to be true for larger numbers; but not yet proved true for every number. If you ask a good mathematician if this "conjecture" is probably true, he won't say "yes" but rather "it may or may not be. It remains to be proved, if possible". Some have turned out to be false. A good mathematician does not presume. Many of you are not nearly as clever or careful. You hold theistic or atheistic views based on partial knowledge, limited and often faulty reasonings, and experiences. But unlike the wise mathematician you trust in something which is not a proof, and is therefore meaningless. At least theists may have been "abducted by God". Other than that, agnosticism is the logical imperative

  • I wonder if a couple of you with good mathematical intellects could do me a favor?

There was a mathematical question which appeared in the wordplay category a couple of weeks back. I was the only who solved it(there were only 5 answers)and it was a good solution, but as u know many people take the answers and run. Anyways one guy said it couldn't be solved, which was not true. I believe he voted for his answer out of spite and I voted for mine, and these are the only 2 votes cast so far.

Anyways if you type in "I have a question please solve the same" into the yahoo questions search engine, it will come up. Just read the problem, and the only 2 serious answers, and cast a vote for what you truly think is the best answer. I don't care about the points since if I receive 10 points for that question, or not, I'll be awarding 10 points for an answer here. When you've done that then answer this and render your opinion. Thanks for doing this if you do.

  • 10 points to the first one who can tell me the answer to this question?

What am I thinking of when I say 6"+"9 = 3"+"6, and what is the answer? Hint: I am timing you, with red eyes. Yes, I know it's a stupid question.

  • How many of you wish you had the option of choosing the worst answer to your question?

Perhaps things could be set up so they would lose the 2 points they gained for answering, or maybe even 10, or one to five depending on the number of stars, or would that create mortal enemies?

  • To those who have "accepted" Christ: what was ur life like before this decision and how did Christ change it?

Why did you make the decision and what difference has Christ made in your life; both in your inner being and in your lifestyle? Thanks for your answer.
