  • Do you notice the chord inversions played in Over the Hills & far Away by Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wEi2aYmdNU

I really noticed the main intro chord progression's tonic is inverted from the 3rd and 5th position to the 9th and 7th positions. Both being major chord inversions keeping with the resonant introductory theme from the guitar.

I am writing a tutorial regarding the use of chord inversions and I posit that inversions are the secret to keeping a chord progression exciting to the listener and player alike. It allows you to hear or play the same general idea or pep it up without abandoning the musical thought or "groove" as it is. I think Over The Hills is a great example of it's usage in a rock song. Jimmy Page does this in many other songs too.

Can you hear the chord inversions when he plays them, or do you just jam the song because it ROCKS! And, do you know of other songs that chord inversions play a big part of the arrangement?

  • How does playing triads over bass notes best function for the modern jazz artist out there?

When playing my lounge-jazz shows solo acoustic style, I love to find better ways to fill up the open space in the room. It is the greatest challenge to me when I play solo. Playing triads over bass notes help me with creating harmony over pedal tones, which basically allows me to play bass and guitar with the sustained pitch that is usually the lowest pitch, at the same time or close together, so that it sounds like two people playing.

So any suggestions or comments regarding how jazz artists like you or those you know of use triads over bass tones? j:)

  • Jim Morisson vs Robert Plant, who did you like more?

Both sang for some of Rock's biggest bands of their era.

Both sang a mix of blues lyrics, and stylistically voiced their vocal pronunciations like old blues musicians, (e.g. they tried to sound like old black dudes such as Robert Johnson and Willie Dixon).

But both also had an esoteric streak and sang about wild far-out tangential metaphors and folklore.

Both had great range, I think Robert Plant could sing higher and Jim Morisson could sing lower better.

Am I forgetting anything? They have a lot in common on a subjective level.

    My take:

I was the Doors fan in my household growing up and my bros and sister liked Led Zeppelin. So I absorbed as much as any kid could that didn't see the bands or grow up in the 60's or 70's.

My first ever Rock concert was Robert Plant when I was a kid, about 11. The Black Crowes opened for him and they were crazy awesome loud and jamming. In retrospect, they actually blew Robert Plant's band off the stage. But I was too young to know what I was witnessing. However, I have since seen Robert Plant when he toured with Jimmy Page and that was really amazing.

Still, I give it to Jim Morrison. His voice was richer in tone, he sang about things that I could relate to, the anti-war songs, the trippy Lizard King - I can do anything attitude. Some of his stuff was weird and dark but he always brought it back around with a solid cut or riff about the real subject matter. Robert Plant goes out there and just looses me on so many levels, but I respect him just the same.

I also think Jim Morrison is still alive, and that the Doors know where he lives, some Château de Morrison, where they send him the royalty checks and keep him fed and what not. This will be the one major conspiracy revealed in our lifetime I think. j:)

  • Was the gun from the movie The American with George Clooney based on any real gun like that?

The gun he makes for the assassin girl. http://popcornmoviereview.com/wp-content/uploads/2...

Could a gun maker really make that with his hands and some random gear he got from a tool shop, or is guns like this only made by high dollar manufacturers with big fancy machinery?

Bonus Question & SPOILER ALERT if you haven't seen the movie don't read this if you don't want to know what happens at the end). ----- When he realizes the girl is a double agent, he decides to rig the gun to back-fire. Is this movie full of gun fantasy or is there any real possibility that a gun maker can make that gun with his hands, then rig it to backfire?

  • Was Jim Morrison a crazy sociopath?

I love The Doors and Jim growing up, I read all the books, the poetry, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

But last night I watched a special about the last day of Jim Morrison and they talked to a lot of people that really knew him, and this one guy said he thought Jim was a "sociopath." I can see that crazy look in his eyes sometimes, but I can't tell if that was an act, or the look of drug/alcohol abuse on an otherwise really cool, deep, and talented individual.

The definition of a sociopath is: A person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience.--

Being drunk definitely causes that in some people, so was Jim a sociapath, or just a drunk (or both)?

  • What do you think about the statistic that in America there is a loaded gun pointed at you 45% of the time?

Loaded guns in America are pointed at people in passing cars, other houses and apartments, on the persons, almost half the lifetime of the average American there is a loaded gun pointed directly at them.

Many Americans are looking at a loaded gun right now, or have one (or more) within 15 feet of them. Other Americans just shot a loaded gun, and sadly the statistics show that most likely someone was just killed or badly injured by gunfire.

What do Americans think, and feel, about being the target of a gun 45 percent of their lifetimes?

  • Who likes music with odd and complex time signatures?

This is where Metal and Jazz have a great deal in common. Both genres have some very complex time signatures. In Jazz i use not only the standard 4/4 but also 5/4, 6/4 and 3/4.

I notice Metal uses 7/8 and 11/8, those are wicked sick time signatures.

I also like straight-ahead music with normal rhythms too, but love some exotic tempos and rhythms in music. Do you even notice what time signature the song is in, or does that really matter when you jam out?

  • What is the best ways to eat broccoli?

Before you say something like "with your mouth," or "go google it," I just wanted to see what some real people do to make broccoli taste better when they eat it.

I need to have more greens in my diet and I think I could handle broccoli with some cheese, and garlic & herb dressing, but that's probably not healthy to dip it in that stuff right?

  • What is your favorite thing about Jazz music and your least favorite thing about it?

For me, I love the improvisational aspect. It is really fun to play Jazz guitar and it's cool to listen to guys like George Benson, Grant Green and John Scofield. I also really like good horn players like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Karl Denson.

But I don't like the way that some Jazz songs can sound like elevator music, and feel really boring with a overloaded horn section or multi-layed keyboard sounds that ruin cool parts of the song.

What about you? What do you like or dislike about Jazz?

  • Guns or Guitars, which would you rather have and why?

I say guitars because they are safer and funner to me. I know some people do own both, but if you had to choose between having a gun or guitar, which would you choose?

Also, if you want to get into a further discussion about the question, what do you think about the saying that "guns don't kill people, people do?" I think that is not true because a gun can misfire without anyone ever touching it. It can fall or get knocked down or around and fire a deadly bullet. It can misfire when being handled. It is so deadly to even have around your house or on your person.

On the other hand, my guitars are fairly safe to have. The only thing that can happen bad is if a string pops and snaps toward an eyeball, that hurts! But mostly the guitar is easy to play and doesn't act up like that. And when I don't play them, they sit like furniture in the corner, or in their case. The worst thing that can happen if a guitar falls over is it will break, unless it falls on a loaded gun that then misfires and shoots a bullet.

Sans that event, my guitar might get stolen, it might get pawned, or God knows -- learned how to be played by someone. If a kid finds my guitar and starts messing with it when I'm not around, then the worst thing that can happen is they might knock it out of tune or break it maybe, but they too just might learn how to play the darn thing just by fooling around with it and that would be totally ok with me. Guns do kill people, it's just people help them do it.
