I'm a Canadian living in Cuernavaca, Mexico since 1996. In my past life, I was an engineer in a big natural gas company. Now, I provide computer services, mostly to the foreign community in Cuernavaca and work with various charities and cultural exchange organizations. When I have spare time, I like to travel Mexico by motorcycle.

  • 2 user simultaneous IMAP access?

I have a client who has an email acount with access via IMAP in Outlook 2007 (not Exchange). His secretary accesses the same account with the same user & pass. The client wants to see unread mail in *bold* in Outlook but, if the secretary opens the email, it shows as *Read* in his Outlook.

Is there a way to configure the account so that each person sees email as unread until they open it themselves?

  • With Photoshop CS3, how do I balance brightness in a photo with a sunny window in a dark room?

Using Photoshop CS3, I need to tuneup several photos that are taken looking toward a window. How do I make a mask to brighten the room without brightening the window?

    Additional Details

Arturo, I appreciate the suggestion but the client sent the photos and I have do work with them. Do you have any ideas?

B.K. yes, I've done HDR and agree the results can be spectacular. And yes, I understand the limits of PS. As the great philosopher Jagger said, "You can't always get what you want." :-)

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear in my question and this might be the wrong category.

I recall seeing a technique in Photoshop whereby you can apply a gradient mask over a background layer and then apply brightness/contrast/levels/etc over the mask. The result is that the dark areas get a little brighter and the bright areas a little darker. Adjust to minimize the noise to burn ratio.

My problem is that after I apply the mask, the brightness/contrast menus are not available.

    Any Photoshop boffins out there?

  • Have you been to Bonampak?

What is the road like from Comitan to Bonampak to Palenque? Is it passable on a touring style motorcycle? I would go in March or April.

    Thanks for any hints!

  • Can you provide an example of a moral act, done unconsciously?

I was having a debate with a friend on the nature of morality. I suggested that a moral act is an act done with the intention of increasing someone else's well-being. He thought that the act does not require intentionality.

Some of our discussion sprouted from Sam Harris' "The Moral Landscape".

  • Can I connect to two ISPs simultaneously?

I have a client that needs reliable internet access. She already has internet access with the local cable company and a separate DSL access with the phone company. Either service could go down once per month for a half a day.

What if I connect the LAN side of both modems to a switch/hub and connect another cable from the switch to the WAN port of a router. The LAN side of the router will connect to all the devices in-house. The router is the DHCP server on the LAN side (192.168.1.xxx) and both modems plus the WAN side of the router will have fixed IPs (192.168.0.xxx).

Is there any chance this will work? Cost is not an issue, it has to be available 24/365.

  • What is your earliest childhood memory?

I can remember sitting in a sunbeam just inside the front door of our home. I was probably less than 2 years old as I remember crawling away.

I'm 53 now. How about you?

  • Is the Christian God just?

Person A commits a crime. Person B is found guilty and Person C is punished. I hope we all agree that this is not just.

Adam and Eve disobey god, everybody is guilty of sin and then Jesus is executed. Is this just?

Don't even start the free will argument. God decided everyone is guilty and then sacrificed Jesus, no free will there.

  • Does anyone have sugggestions to control bickering in Yahoo Groups?

I moderate a group of 700+ members. Every once in a while some petty argument breaks out between a 10 or 20 members that swamps the normal group activity. I've tried posting rules, warning and baning but it keeps happening. Ideas or suggestions?

  • Al-Qahtani - Suicide or Death Penalty?

In the news this AM, AP reports that Al-Qahtani, "the 20th hijacker" tried to kill himself:

"Al-Qahtani made the suicide attempt after learning military prosecutors filed capital charges against him and five other Guantanamo prisoners for their alleged roles in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"I cannot accept this injustice," the lawyer quoted him as saying. "If I have to stay in this jail, I want to put an end to this suffering."

Of course, I don't have any sympathy for this guy but it would be interesting to know what's going through his mind.

Is it a Muslum thing? Is there more honor in suicide that public execution?

Is he worried of being tortured more while awaiting trial?

If you have any real insight into this, I'd really appreciate hearing from you.

  • Can anyone give me some ideas to diversify my RRSP to include holdings outside of Canada and the US?

I have about $10K to work with in a self-managed RRSP. I'm comfortable doing Fundamental Analysis of Oil & Gas companies or Mining companies. I'm also comfortable with basic Technical Analysis techniques. I hope to find something that returns 15% or better per year.

    Thanks for your ideas!

  • How do I calculate the power consumption for a 3 phase motor?

I have a 3 phase motor running a water pump for a hydrostatic system for a home.

I measured the current on each phase at 4.90, 4.60 and 4.35 amps. The voltage is 127 vac and the pump runs a total of 19 minutes per day. It only runs for about 30 seconds each time it starts and stops.

So the power per day (P), in kWHr is:

    P = (4.90 + 4.60 + 4.35) amps x 127 volts x 19 minutes per day) / (60 minutes per hour x 1000 watts per kW) = 0.557 kWHr per day

Is that about right? Sounds too low.

Should I use a power factor? What value?

Should include the startup current? (15 amps for 1/4 sec?)

    Thanks in advance!

  • What do Godel's Incompleteness Theorems imply about the existence of the Abrahamic God?

Can these theorems be extrapolated to conclude that the Abrahamic version of God must be incomplete (not omnipotent or omniscient) or inconsistent (capricious or unreliable)?

Please, answers don't need to include descriptions of the theorems nor should they include quotes from the scriptures. There is plenty of room for that, elsewhere. Thank you!

  • In a swimming pool, what makes the water hard?

Our pool shows 60 ppm Ca, 80 ppm Alkaninity, 7.4 pH, Clorine 3 ppm. It's outdoor, uncovered, 44m^3, tiled.

Recommended Calcium hardness is 200 ppm but it doesn't feel soft on the skin. Is there some other chemical making it hard?

  • You are a hobo and you have a helium filled balloon...?

You are travelling in a sealed box car that left the station several minutes ago and is accellerating smoothly, at a constant accelleration of 0.1 G.

You're bored so you tie the ballon to the center of the floor with 1 meter of string.

Does the balloon float straight up, lean toward the back or lean toward the front? Why? If it leans, how much?
