Rats! Coincidence or not ?...Hospitalizations possible exposure to rat feces . We have adult indoor only cats?
Hi, after my neighbors THREE kids ( ages 5, 14, 17 ) all became I'll, two resulting with surgery for Appendix, the oldest gastric & possible urinary bleeding (swelling in appendix returned to normal after hospitalization) ALL 3 since Dec 2013 to March 2014. Now my oldest has been up and down with some undiagnosible GI related problems that came to his being hospitalized for some pretty severe colon bleeding WBC in 25 thousand last week. No e-coli and two other food poisoning bugs most commonly found. His Appendix was also enlarged but later CT showed back to normal since heavy duty antibiotics. Still waiting on some labs but see my QUESTION IS: Could it be exposure to Rats ?? How coincidental or related ? Their doctor tied it to rat exposure, evidently our building has issue none of us were warned about. We hear the nasty things in the walls and I believe the cats help us to a point But FOUR young people from 5-20 yrs old ALL with too close or similar sicknesses ? Hospitalized, 3 had procedures..I'm not familiar with Rat (not mice) diseases but can anyone give input ???? Yes we are ALL TRYING to move, but management won't budge on neighbors lease and we aare $ strapped..BTW we are all sanitizing.
COULD IT BE THESE RATS ? And what labs to look for ?? Thanks.y

1 AnswerCats7 years agoWhy Are People So Cruel?
I recently tried to ask a question, it got lost when I added a history that was supposed to explain why I was so anxious....One person politely responded, but believe it was my poorly written "question" was a bit misunderstood..But I understand why SO I added a short explanation.
It was then that one person felt it necessary to label it all as a "rant"...(this written after I cleaned up into a shorter version (or so I thought) because it was after that is when the 2nd & angrier complaint came...
But in this there was the kindness of one, no judgment, just encouragement.
QUESTION: as in the title, why are people so cruel, or feel the need to "put people in their place" in one fashion or another ? IF you don't understand, or have an answer then why not move on to another ?
I don't know if there is real explanation when it comes to my question since we live in a world filled with these types and worse. I've read so many cruel responses to many who are just reaching out which is so unnecessary let alone sad and pathetic. I'm curious as to what people feel about this..
2 AnswersOther - Society & Culture7 years agoFirst no judgements please...We lost our very much loved & cared for cat to breast C at the age of 8+ yrs old.?
We lost her to a horrible disease, she was INDOOR only and we kept shots to date, did all the healthy things. Our other 2 are older rescues, now 12+ & 7 yrs old, both altered, but our 8 yr old was not, and believe me the pain of guilt is very real. Ignorance on our part of never learning that the way we lost her, we really never knew, no vet ever told us and I'm not blaming anyone but myself.
After we lost her, it hit very hard and maybe people will say I deseve that, I feel so. For over 12 years we have rescued & fostered and it wasn't until we lost her we learned a hard lesson.
Our older feline family members mourned, especially "big sister", my son has been hit very hard he got sick...as for me..its been difficult.
Some weeks we were out and ended up stopping at a Rescue place 30 miles from home, I really can't explain why or how because those days were like being lost in a fog..we were out to get away, the grief was acute, that day was the beginning of Oct/2012. Long story short my son & I went in, we were sitting in one of the rooms ( nice modern place, not home but has a homey look.
We sat there and were about to go when one young one was really "working it" to get our attention, my son had stated that it was painful to see so many..Ok..she ended up coming home with us, and the place charges 85 but that includes Spay & Mic/chip. Getting her to our vet she ended up with a $300+ bill due to shots and a stomache parasite (giardia??) Spay appt was sched by where we got her (Jan 29/2014) they're that bzy..We got iced weather that week, I didn't want to wait longer since she had 2 cycles, our Vet $200+ tax & meds...I came across a new & local low cost $50 plus pain meds e-collar total $95. PAID.!!! FEAR: she had 2 maybe a mini seaon ( seemed as if one was a mini cycle)
FEAR:is she had at LEAST 2 cycles prior, & after what happened last year, I'm AFRAID..I never heard about this new clinic until the day BEFORE her surgery (yeah that quick). Do I worry? Risk ?
3 AnswersCats7 years agoUpdate Kitty Does have Cancer?
We got the horrible news just about an hour ago, my son (23) is taking it very hard and he has been through so much ( please don't tell me this is life because even I don't understand why he can't catch a break )
The Vet obligated to tell us about specialists but we spoke and he told us how aggressive this form she has is. I asked if it was ok to keep her home for awhile and he said yes, he told us what signs to watch out for, Is this wrong ? I see since her surgery *biopsy* she is still a bit slow, do you think this has speed-ed things up ?
She eats but rests a lot, she doesn't hide and seems mostly herself. Are there those out there who has followed this crappy road with us still out there or others who have loved so much it rips your heart out and you don't know what to do ? If there is, what advice is there for me ? Two very important things, I do NOT want us to be oblivious to the signs, and secondly how do I console another in so much pain ?
I told him he shouldn't be surprised if Squirt "sends" someone in need...is that nuts ?
I had thought about after a short time to find a needy one who might fill that void, this is what Squirt herself had did when she first came into our lives, into his. Is that wrong ?
Every question, doubt please please offer your wisdom, she is our family, we have nobody else..and it's a very lonely painful place to be, and to try and be there in the best way for another who is really hurting more than I am..which is so much I can't imagine the depth of it...Help me please.....Please
2 AnswersCats8 years agoUpdate ? On Possible Kitty Cancer?
I recently wrote and told you all about our kitty Squirt ( 8yrs old ), Well she had the first aspiration by needle biopsy, 80% accuracy..well it came back negative.
The Vet gave her an antibiotic shot (good for 10 days) vs shoving pills down her.. We returned today/yesterday since tonight is another sleepless night... and he wasn't happy with how the wound looked so he went ahead and we agreed to the "other" under anesthesia biopsy, this will say if it is or even if its an infection so here we go another 3 days of heart ripping anxiety. Everyone gave wonderful answers, thank you.. My son is 23, he got her after losing his kitty 9 yrs ago. Squirt has been his best buddy,,Well she has been laying around tonight and that worries me, could it be the anesthesia ? I keep asking people to pray for her an my son and some look at me like I'm nuts to be some upset but they don't understand what these guys have given us, They are ALL (3) inside, and I am so scared, one my son has lost so much over the years, he deserves a break, Squirt deserves a long happy healthy life.. I am selfish I want her with us, and I thought about if the news was the worst we would keep her at home until she let us know ( they have their way ). She hasn't lost any weight yet, but so quiet,,is it us ? I don't put the stress on my son, I keep it to myself...This is our only family, and I don't want to cause her any pain at all... so I turn to you all again... help.
2 AnswersCats8 years agoWhat is the kindest thing to do for Kitty who has Cancer?
My 8 year old Kitty has already been to the Vet, my son and I are waiting the Biopsy results, I suspect it is "C". I want to do what is best and kindest for her. Right now she is Active, eating and her wonderful self..My son is EXTREMELY close to her, and it's tearing me apart for him as well...He is not selfish. We do not have thousands to use on the usual treatments, AND the Vet said even if it came to that its no guarantee.. I have 3 kitties, 12 yrs, 7 & 8 yrs old ( She is 8 ). We are STILL hoping but I am being upbeat for my son till we get the answer. See she came into our lives when he lost one before her, he never forgot that kitty either...There is no replacements..But I guess what I am asking is for those who have been through this Roller-coaster of pain & questions.. I need advice, someone who understands... I guess to get to the point...IF, IF it is this horrible disease...is it kinder to let her go right then or........??????? PLEASE PLEASE HELP me with this.

3 AnswersCancer10 years agoA question someone asked about Culture, are you still interested ?
IF you are, here it goes : Ummmm... I'm sure there are cultures in your world, look into your family and grandparents, since my own personal people are indigenous to this side of the globe it wasn't difficult to learn. But you have culture, it's in your bloodline. Where did your ancestors begin ? Europe ? UK ? I say since most "whites" as you put it are linked to the people who came to the land of my ancestors from across the Atlantic. There are web pages that are able to help you learn what your surname ( last name ) is linked with as far as culture. Always remember you are of the Human Race, and it's not what race you are, it's your culture you search for. Good Luck.
3 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoCat question for experienced cat person PLEASE?
I AM taking her to a vet BUT for this weekend I need some input. I have 3 adult cats, 2 female 1 male. The oldest female and the male are both fixed. The middle one is not ( money had been an issue ). ALL INSIDE NEVER OUTSIDE or exposed to other cats. We had just paid up one vet bill and she was next for the fixing thing, I am familiar with pregnancies in Cats after enough rescues, but it's not like I ever checked a cats boobs when the kittens were born..So I'm stumped. She is around 3years old, eats, active, has her cycles( nutty times ). shots all to date. But one time She and the male ( I caught them in the "act", but he has no co-co's. Anyway her boobs are ALL enlarged a tiny bit and firm like, NO discharge, NO redness no tenderness I'm assuming because she allowed me to palpitate them and her abdomen area and sides without squirming or fighting and I know because when something ( she got a slight infection I had to treat from a fight she had with her sister cat, when it came to treatment time, I know it hurt when we cleaned it and put the medication on it, ( I still have a long scar from her fighting me ). With this check up I did she didn't fight me or make a sound like when she did the other time. She's been a wee bit louder ( her talking ) and also meowing more at times at different times and more possessive of my son ( she's his cat ). All more that the usual. Shes a meow-er in her cycles, and then usually calms down. Now she had her most recent cycle APRIL ( early early ) or even end of March(?). The exact time I can't remember weeks due to being down with the flu, THAT is when I caught her with Mr.Goober ( no co-co's remember ), and in the position that cats ( well "their way" ). She allows me to examine her, palpitate her boobs, stomach, and sides No protesting, or fighting her exam Her poo poo's and that are normal, I see no blood in the box, nothing out of the ordinary. And her bathroom habits seem normal.
I also went and checked"him" and the bag was empty.(embarrassing ). One male hangs outside sometimes, but has no access to them, so I am wondering what ?
HAS ANYONE heard of anything similar that wasn't bad news. All her behavior seems normal, like I said, appetite, her usual yappy self, maybe a little hungrier, PLEASE for those who KNOW cats, your input is needed. YES I am taking her to the vet regardless..but it's Saturday and I am concerned....
3 AnswersCats1 decade agoAvatar the movie-Na'vi Rollplay...Isn't it beyond obsession?
I don't understand why human beings go this far from reality ? Maybe someone "out" there can explain why this jump so far from reality ? Imagination is great, as children, haven't most played dress up or pretended to be some imaginary character hero, and even as adults there are those playful moments, but this ? Renaissance fairs once a year, The Trekkies and Star Wars ( while I am not one of them, they do not seem so far from reality ) as I have yet to see them "out there". But half naked people painted blue in wigs and TT-Papering trees, doesn't this seem far from normalcy as it is to la la land ? .I LOVED the movie "Avatar", it was unique in many ways, the characters while seemingly too close to the indigenous of this country, but apart from that a story absolute and I would hope that any sequel can equal or better yet, surpass the first one. But now the blue paint, running around T'Papering trees is supposed to signify? what? Isn't this taking things a little bit too far ? In children I can understand the step away from reality into the world of pretend, but when it's a 20 or 30 something year old adult, isn't this more of a leap into excessive obsession ? While I love having fun, and am by no means a "stick in the mud", my kids might look at this as on the scary side. Did it begin with learning a limited group of sounds created for a movie, or is there are deeper less imaginative reason for getting so out of touch ? Does anyone else see this as strangely weird ?
What happened to being yourself ? Is it less preferable?
3 AnswersMovies1 decade agoDeep Bone Bruises ?? What to do ?
I have been told by these " medical experts " <gag> that I have some contusions, big bruising on big bones like the upper leg, hip and that. I don't exactly understand what that is because I didn't know bones could bruise. Can this cause anything permanent or long term problems ? Are there things I can do to help these heal ? I was told to use ice which I use religiously. But standing is difficult for more than 5 to 10 min ( pushing it ), Walking, well lets just say I am dripping wet from sweat after forcing myself to do the walks I was told to take. Am I hurting myself by doing this ? One doc say this, one doc says something completely different. I am sooooooo frustrated and NEED some feedback. I didn't hit my head, but now I have headaches ALL the time. I am 14 yrs c-spine post op with plates and they are for all matters still intact and for all matters seem to be ok. Help me understand some of this ?
3 AnswersInjuries1 decade agoCan an Accident cause lupus to ?
I have a question for any legal eagles out there, A month ago I had this accident ( non-auto ) and I am about 14 yrs post op from c-spine & lumbar w/some hardware. Within those 14 or so years I have done pretty good, About the only pain I had was caused from weather changes, or over doing things, and then some ice and relaxation, motrin did well. I also have whats called "mild lupus ". Next thing I know, I have this accident ( non-auto related ) and I am in this huge pain cloud. The accident was so hard I was fortunate not to have broken my leg or anything else. I have deep bone contusions ( whatever that is ) and I am in a wheelchair/walker. Life has come to a standstill from what it was before. PT has temporary help, but I keep at it. I push myself from sun up to sunset and I don't know if it's true or not but I am being told now that the lupus has probably flared and is causing the pain to be more widespread. Since I was doing pretty independent,, and for all standards things were under control, and now my life is upside down, I know a lot of the pain is from the accident, but can something like this cause lupus to blow up ? And if so, does this ruin any chance at recovery from the insurance company for the neglect that caused my injury ? I am so angry, and now I have what they call panic problems ( which is new ). Am I just a lost cause, which is unfair because prior to this I worked so hard to make a comeback,.and I am so frigging angry. Any feedback ?
3 AnswersOther - Diseases1 decade agoHome Cooked Lamb & Rice..? OK ?
I am introducing some fresh food to our kitties diet, I wish to coin the term someone used, that they are kitty kibble addicted. ( IAMS ). I recently prepared Lamb & Rice for ourselves, We are lo-to-no sodium, and natural flavors in place of prepared spices. Basmati rice ( Steamed 2 cups with 1 tsp natural lo-sod butter ) some fresh steamed peas & diced carrots . The meat was simmered, then oven roasted till brown. So I took some meat, rice & veggies and diced it up, put a little kibble ( pulverized ) powder and sprinkled it over and set the plate down. Our Mama seemed to love it, the Squirt picked ( she loves peas & carrots ) at it and ate some. Goober, I didn't catch him because he tends to be a nighttime muncher. The plate wasn't wiped clean, and so far no stinky butts..( fingers crossed ). This was Saturday and then a little warmed up this afternoon. I am planning on some oven roasted chicken breast this week, and if the lamb was a good idea I hope to plan more "mutual" meals. I don't know about anyone else, but if I was these kitties, that darn can ( even IAMS ) just doesn't smell tasty. So any suggestions ? And what about a nice bit of baked fish ( boned of course ) ? BTW,,I already knew the Squirt loves peas, but she really surprised me when she snatched up the diced carrots.. :) Any recipes out there ?
6 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoPlasma vs LCD ??? Experienced Input Needed !!!?
I am looking to purchase a television, I found a 42 inch panasonic plasma tv on sale and am unsure whether this or a LCD ( higher cost ) of which would be a better purchase...I understand that a Plasma has outstanding color, but I also "heard" that plasma TVS have a very delicate screen when it comes to stationary or slow moving pictures. And a big NO-NO as far as gaming systems ( ps3, wii, etc ).Here in South Texas Gulf Coast the hot season tends to run from ( give or take a rare week ) at least 7 months of the year, 90's already beginning in May thru September ( sometimes later into October although not as intense )., so we tend to keep things dark ( lined drapes and "sun proofing" the windows since we get that direct sun mid-morn till sunset all year round,((( being the "Texas Sun", you can get a tan in the winter because it is so much hotter than up north))). Opening things up to let the light in during the cooler seasons. BUT the unit would never been in line with any direct sun or window. Can you help me understand the pros and cons of a Plasma ( cost less than a LCD) Since Plasmas have been known having a image burned into the screen ( both temp & permanent ) from certain images. Our tv is on quite( probably more than what most call normal ) And there are times I fall asleep with the tv on. ( I do my best to switch off when I am sleepy, probably need to set the timer ) So Electronic peoples...Input very much needed.. Also, I have did a little research on the pro's and con's, but the information out there is somewhat limited..So Hollar !
BTW,, LCD's seem to cost more :(
6 AnswersTVs1 decade agoDoes your kitty do this?
My youngest, Louie ( Goober ) is the one guy we rescued who was terribly abused, now some years gone by he has mellowed out and is overall friendly to everyone,,isn't this odd for a cat who was abused so badly? Another question, does your kitty have different "facial" expressions ? It's weird but Louie gets this "round wide-eyed little kitten face" when approaches me on the bed and "plumps" me up..AND yet, he can look so totally different when he has a bug up his butt..and has this real "eat poo" look..And when he has been bad, and I've chastised him..he seems to actually seems to hold a grudge and will totally show favoritism towards my son and ignore me, does this happen to anyone else ? I'm laying here and "the goob" is on my right shoulder watching the monitor....so wave :)
5 AnswersCats1 decade agoMy Cats ODD behavior ( update)?
Thanks for the info about ingestion,, As to this date she has kept her plastic fetish to licking, As you mentioned about "proofing" your home, As we go, we learn and do prevention. I am unable to have ANY houseplants inside.( Even plastic ones ! ).They just pounce on them ( I educated myself on toxic plants and pets ). So I purchased some "pet grass" at PETCO, I heard it was supposed to be good for them. I would like to learn which veggies are best for them because I could incorporate this into their diet. Since they eat IAMS dry, they get tummy issues with wet food and I "heard" that a diet of dry is not the best. Any suggestions ?
