Which language do you think sounds the most beautiful and the most ugly?
For instance, I think French, and all the Scandinavian languages sound amazingly beautiful. I think my favorite would have to be Icelandic, though. I also think Dutch and German are interesting sounding, not necessarily beautiful, but interesting.
I think the most ugly sounding language is Polish. To me, it just sounds like someone is gargling spit while saying "shshshchshshshchcsh" constantly.
Opinions (:
12 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoAtheists: Do you think religious worship will be deemed a mental illness in the future?
I have a theory that as science evolves and researches that they will, in some time in the future, find that being religious is a mental illness.
For instance, in modern times, if someone claims to be "seeing things" that aren't there, we generally know that they are schizophrenic, and need to be medicated and possibly watched 24/7. But back in times such as the Middle Ages, people would generally think that people were seeing "visions" and "miracles" and so on.
I think that this same phenomenon will happen again, but to an even more great extant. I believe that they will eventually find that the believe in God(s) is a mental illness. Whether or not they need medication for it, I'm not sure. They probably will only need a good douse of education.

15 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoMy Macbook 13' won't turn on?
I just bought my Macbook 8 months ago. I turned it off last night and it was fully charged, unpluged the charger from the wall, and went to bed.
When I woke up this morning, I went to go turn it on again. When I turned it on, it indicate that there was 0% left battery power which seemed odd to me since I turned it off with a full charge.
Then it turned off by itself because I cause the battery power was THAT low, so I wasn't able to turn it off properly. I tried charging it and then seeing if it would turn back on, but that's not working either because I have a bad charger.
Could it be something to do with the power charger? This is already the second charger that I bought and it's starting to break on me the same way that the first one broke. Sometimes when it's in the light will indicate it's charging but the icon on the desktop will indicate that it's still on battery mode. I just ordered a new charger with a lifetime warranty.
I'm just worried that it's something worse then just a bad power charger! Any thoughts would be great, thanks.
3 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoA question to anyone currently learning a language!?
Have you ever notice that it's harder to understand a native speaker of the language you're learning than it is to understand a non-native speaker speaking the same language? I was watching a French talk show once and I could barely understand the interviewer, but his guest (who was English and speaking French) I could understand with little difficulty. They both were speaking at the same speed and pronouncing words the same, but the sentence structure of the non-native speaker just seemed easier to follow than the native speaker.
Why do you think this is?
2 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoCar acceleration and misfiring when wet problems!?!?!??!?!?
I have a Volkswagen Jetta 2003 2.0 and every time it rains, the car misfires like crazy or it will try to start up, shake violently, and then turn off. It recently has had a tune up, with all spark plugs and wires replaced. Also, the Volkswagen dealership fixed an electrical problem for free that apparently Jettas are known for getting problems with.
Also, the acceleration on the car is really slow. I have to revv the engine up really high just from stopping at a red light, after the car picks up momentum, the RPMs drop down to normal again and the car slightly bucks forward. Almost like it's "breaking free" or as if I had a manual transmission instead of an automatic.
Sometimes when the car is going up hill, and the RPMs are high and I try stepping on the throttle a little more, the RPMs will shoot REALLY high and the car will not move forward. It goes back to normal again when it feels as though the car is "catching" something in order to get that boost of acceleration
Could both of these problems be related or would they be separate issues? The car has around 100,000 miles on it.
2 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoCar won't start up after it rains? HELP!?
I have a Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 that DOES NOT like rain!
Today I went to go start it up, and it sounds like it's trying to start, but then it starts to shake and misfire and then shut off.
I've had tune up recently and all the spark plugs and electrical wires replaced by a Volkswagen dealer a couple months ago, and everything was working fine and there were no problems with wet weather. But now, the same problems are happening again, and worse then before.
When I can finally get it to stop turning off, it shakes and misfires like crazy at idle, but when I revv up the gas pedal, it sounds fine.
Once the car has been running up for a couple of minutes and the engine warms up, I turn it off for a few minutes, turn it back, and the car is working perfectly fine like nothing happened to it.
What do you think it could be if it's not a spark problem? Main relay? The issue is so odd to me because the car starts to act fine once it's warmed up.
Thank you for your help!
1 AnswerMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoPlaces to Study Old Norse, Old English, Ancient Germanic languages?
I want to become a linguistic when I'm older, and I want to focus my studies on Germanic languages, mostly the old ones like Old Norse, Old English, Gothic etc.
Does anyone know any Universities that have problems that specifically teach ancient Germanic languages for linguistics majors? I'm having a hard time finding a problem in this field. Most of the ones that I've found are separate.
3 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoQuestion about the differences between Quebec French and European French?
I plan to study at an English speaking University in Montréal (McGill) But, I've been studying only European French at school here in the US. Are there significant differences between the 2 dialects? Will I be in trouble once I get to Montréal?
Can you post examples of the differences? Sentences? Pronunciation? etc.
Really appreciate it thanks!
3 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoSome questions about Montréal? English or French? Thinking about going to school there...?
I know that Montréal is a French speaking city, but there are also a lot of people who speak English as well. I've heard so many different stories from people as to which language is used more. When I look at pictures of Montréal, it seems like Highway signs, Billboards, Newspapers etc are all in French, yet some people have told me that most people speak English to one another more than French? Some people have told me that they just speak French normally and just sometimes in English?
So my question is, if I were to walk into, say, a café, restaurant, clothing store or grocery store in Montréal, would people be addressing me in French or English? And on the streets, do people just normally converse in French or English?
I want to know as much as I kind because I really want to go to the University of McGill in Montréal.
Also, is there a significant difference between Quebec French and Metropolitan French? In terms of writing, they seem the same, but their accents seem different?
All the information you know will be great! Thanks!

5 AnswersImmigration1 decade agoIs it cheaper for Europeans to travel than it is for Americans?
I have friends in the United Kingdom and France, and they're ALWAYS traveling! They're not rich either. I think they would be in the lower-middle class ranking. My friends in England just came back from a Spanish resort in Spain, and they're planning on going to Turkey and even Greece within the next 2 months!
My friends in France just went to Australia for a WHOLE MONTH. They also fly to places in Asia in the summertime for vacation and everything.
So, are flying prices in Europe a lot cheaper than they are in America? I remember one of my English friends saying that you can get round-trip tickets to Italy for under £50!
Does it have to do with the Euro and Pound currency since they're worth more? Do airlines and resorts offer lower prices to Europeans for some reason?
It's so expensive to travel here in America, especially on a plane. My family hasn't been on vacation in years even though we're upper-middle class!
1 AnswerOther - Destinations1 decade agoQuestions about transferring from one college to another? SATs and ACTs?!?!?!?
Hi, I'm currently at a local community college where I'm studying to increase my GPA and take some basic classes to get those out of the way for when I transfer to a 4 year University.
My questions are about SATs and ACTs. A lot of the colleges I'm looking to transfer to all require you to summit SAT and ACT scores. The last time I took my SAT was when I was a junior in High School, and I got pretty awful scores. I didn't really take education seriously back then, but now that I've waken up, I'm doing very well. I currently have at least an A in most of my college classes, and nothing lower than a B.
My question is this, would I have to take the SAT or ACT test over again in order to score higher to gain acceptance into the University I want to transfer to? Would my current college grades be sufficient enough alone? I don't want to summit such awful grades, and have them hurt my chances.
I'm mostly looking to transfer to McGill University in Montréal to study linguistics. I heard that Canadian schools often just look at grades to back a decision whether or not that applicant is accepted, but I'm just not sure? It's really a dream school of mine, and I would be very upset if I didn't get in.
Do I even have to summit SAT or ACT grades if I'm a transfer student?
Please help! I would greatly appreciate it!
2 AnswersStandards & Testing1 decade agoWarm weather causing depression, cold weather makes me happy?
Is there any scientific evidence supporting this?
When it's hot and sunny outside, I'm usually in a really bad mood. I'm always miserable and sad have weird moods. During the summer nights is usually when this depressed feeling comes along. The heat also gives me really bad headaches in the summer, and I usually always feel physically sick.
The exact opposite happens in the winter time. I'm happy and joyous. The cold weather feels really good on my skin, and I usually feel physically fine and healthy as a horse. I just feel normal and happy. I also love the Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and just everything!
Isn't it usually the opposite with human beings? That the sun makes people happy and no sun makes people depressed? The same thing for warm weather versus cold weather? I want to hear your thoughts!
3 AnswersWeather1 decade agoIs it possible for humans to develop red eyes naturally?
I was reading about genetic and human eye color on the internet, and I was just wondering, would it be possible for humans to develop red colored eyes? Or maybe even pink? Or yellow? I know it's possible to have violet eyes, since Elizabeth Taylor has them. From what I was reading, it seemed that the possibilities are endless because genetics work so mysteriously. I know most of the change in eye color is due to evolution from different environments that humans have lived in throughout the history of our species. What are some environmental factors that would help evolve red eyes? Pink eyes? Maybe even golden or yellow eyes? I want to hear your thoughts!
2 AnswersBiology1 decade agoWhy did the City Hall Subway in NYC get shut down?
I can't seem to find a reason for the shut down anywhere. It seems like the closed it down for no reason? And why don't they re-open it? It adds such an elegance to the City's subways since the subways are known to be one of the ugliest in the world.
4 AnswersNew York City1 decade agoCan you change your last name to something random?
Is that possible?
I know there are some issues with changing your last name and it ends up being someone else's last name, but aren't there lots of people with the same surname who aren't related? That just doesn't make sense to me.
Besides, I want to change it to something unique and something not considered a last name. I want to change it to "Hjarta" which is the Icelandic word for "heart."
Is this possible, or will the system give me a really hard time trying to do it?
7 AnswersFamily1 decade agoHow would you say "the heart" in Icelandic?
I'm thinking about getting "the heart" in Icelandic as a tattoo on my collar bone.
Would it be "hjartað" since it's singular and neuter? Or is it irregular and requires a different ending?
2 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoBlood in urine? No other significant symptoms? HELP!?
Recently I've been having blood on and off in my urine for a couple years now, with no other symptoms. I put it off in my mind has just irritation and drank some cranberry juice for it.
I finally was able to get the nerve to go the doctor. She tested my urine and said there was a big trace amount of microscopic blood in there and ruled it has a UTI and gave me some antibiotics.
I'm done with my antibiotics, but I'm still having some dark urine, especially in the mornings but then it will go away throughout the day.
The only other symptoms I'm really having is a very faint dull pain in the area where my right kidney is, but it's not even that much to notice and it goes away fairly quickly. Also, when I pee there is a strange feeling of pressure and I can almost feel the urine coming down through my urethra before it gets out of my body and it comes with a slight stinging sensation, but it's not anything drastic. Also, sometimes when there's no visible blood in my urine, it looks cloudy and milky.
My questions are: Could this be a kidney stone even without the really bad pain that's usually associated with them? Could it still be a UTI and I just need more medication? Do UTIs last a long time? Can kidney stones last a long time and still not be passed? I'm really worried that I might have kidney or bladder cancer but I'm only 19 years old and I'm not a smoker.
Any information would be amazing. Thanks!
5 AnswersInfectious Diseases1 decade ago2003 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 GL acceleration problems?
I have a 2003 Volks Jetta and recently it's been having some weird acceleration problems. It has just had a tune up and a Volkswagen Dealership fixed a weird electrical problem, so I don't think it's a spark plug problem. What's been happening is that car is revving REALLY high, but the car has very slow forward movement, and it takes a long time to pick up speed. It also seems to rev high when going at slowish speeds. I think it was at around 3,000 RPMs just going at 40 mph when it's usually at around 2,000/2,300 RPMs going at the same speed.
Sometime before, I always had to rev the engine high to pick up speed after stopping, the RPMs would increase, but then the car would jerk forward when the acceleration picked up and the RPMs would go back down to normal.
The car has almost 100,000 miles on it. It's around 99,600. Could it be the transmission? Clutch? Help!
5 AnswersVolkswagen1 decade agoCould I have a middle ear infection?
My symptoms are:
Foggy headed/pressurized feeling in head
Ears cracking when opening jaw
Ears popping when swallowing
Tiny bit of head pain, but happens rarely
Slight dizziness, but nothing too severe
These symptoms come and go every couple days for about 1 1/2 weeks. They never go away 100%, I still feel the slight pressurized feeling when all the other symptoms go away.
It's making me really worried. Could it be an inner ear infection? Could it be something else? Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks !
