Are wasps really stupid?
People often tell me if you kill a warp, it will cause more of them to come. So my question is a two fold one. Firstly is this actually true? Secondly, if it is true, are these wasps idiots? To me it seems like a really dumb move to fly off to some location where it is known that a fellow wasp or wasps have been killed. I know they don't really have the intelligence to reason that out, but surely evolution would have stopped this from being the case. Arriving at a place where other wasps have been killed is almost certain to result in the deaths of more if not all of the others. Evolution would then favour the ones that had a genetic predisposition to stay the hell away.

They are being forced to fight by a Supergod, kind of like a Star Trek Kirk vs Gorn scenario.
9 AnswersReligion & Spirituality10 years agoWhat is a "Dual Circuit Switch"?
I just bought a large 2 gallon water heater for the kitchen. The instructions say that to comply with regulations, it must be connected to the mains supply via a Dual Circuit Switch and an immediate earth, neither of these seem to make any sense, I just thought it was plugged in, switched on and done.
5 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs10 years agoI keep having Gay dreams?
I keep having dreams where I'm involved in homosexual activities. I do not consider myself gay, I am aroused and turned on by women, I do look at female porn, I am not married but have a gf. I thought maybe I maybe in the closet or that gayness was asserting itself, which I would have no objection to if that was the way I am. But men simply do not sexually excite me. I have experimented by looking at male porn, thinking about gay activities, you name it, none of it gives me any kind of excitement. So I do not understand why I keep having dreams about it. In the dream the acts do not seem awkward or wrong in any way, and I am aware that the acts are homosexual, and there is even a degree of excitement in the dream, but in reality, nothing. What on earth is going on?
7 AnswersLesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender10 years agoDo you think Windows 8 (or whatever they call it) will be a bust?
Windows versions (for home computers) seem to be like Star Trek films, we get a good one then a bad one in order starting from 3.
Windows 3 was pretty poor.
Windows 3.11 was better and considered a good version (I consider 3.11 a different version)
Windows 95 although a significant upgrade was a poor and buggy OS
Windows 98 was great (i consider SE to be the same version)
Windows ME was a complete disaster
Windows XP was brilliant
Windows Vista was the worst OS ever made, just dreadful, epic fail, etc...
Windows 7 seems to be fine.
Going on this trend, I would expect Windows 8 to be buggy and grim and should give it a miss until Windows 9. Do you agree?
8 AnswersSoftware10 years agoVariable Size Multi Dimensional Array Casting?
Hi all.
This is my first post so before I start begging for help let me first say that I am very grateful to the people who contribute and created this site. It has been invaluable to me for quick and easy reference. So thank you, hugely.
Now to my "problem". I am working with a game engine library, and for the most part everything is great. I just have a small issue that I would ideally like to fix. The library does many things, one of which is supply Game Map data.
int s_x, int s_y;
char* mapData=(char*)MapData(s_x,s_y);
s_x and s_y are output vars which receive the dimensions of the 2D map (W x H), each map element is comprised of 8 bytes, s_x of these form 1 row and s_y rows form the entire data block.
At the moment I can access byte (n) of the element at a particular row (y) and column (x) like this:
mapData[ (s_x*y*8) + (x*8) + n ]
What would be very useful to me is if I could access an element like this:
mapData[y][x][n]
So far I have not been able to find any information on casting the pointer to a multidimsional array type. I can do it if the map size is always the same using a typedef but I cannot work out or find out how to cast to variable sizes or if it's even possible.
Many thanks for any help.
Alain.
1 AnswerProgramming & Design10 years agoWinsock Monitoring Application?
HI
I'm looking for software that can monitor ALL Winsock API calls, plus be able to filter the calls you wish to/don't wish to monitor. I found something called SocktSpy/32 (no that is not a spelling mistake it IS SOCKT) which looked perfect for my needs but all the download links I could find for it were broken. Can anyone suggest some software that does what I need.
Please note, I am not looking for a network sniffer, or software to intercept and view network traffic, I need a Winsock API monitor.
Thanks.
2 AnswersProgramming & Design10 years agoDLL calling its own functions?
Can a Windows DLL exported function call another exported function of the same DLL? For example:
__declspec(dllexport) int __cdecl Function1();
__declspec(dllexport) int __cdecl Function2();
....
__declspec(dllexport) int __cdecl Function1() { return Function2(); }
__declspec(dllexport) int __cdecl Function2() { return 102; }
Most importantly, if this IS allowed. Is the call made by Function1 to Function2 done directly, or would it be called via the current process's JMP table for the DLL.

9 AnswersOther - Politics & Government1 decade agoIf a metal surface is not flat, how does it reflect light?
I have heard from reliable sources that an apparently smooth metal surface is in fact not smooth at all, but under a microscope it is like a mountain range of irregularity. If this is the case, how does light reflect off it so evenly, why is the light not scattered everywhere?
2 AnswersPhysics1 decade agoIs there an Author battle going on using obscure words?
I read many books, mainly fiction in the fantasy/horror/drama genre but I have been known to delve into other areas. I have noticed that many authors seem to revel in using really bizarre words so that you have to have a dictionary on stand-by. I mean, I'm all for expanding my vocabulary but seriously, do these authors actually know all these words off the bat or are they spending hours with a thesaurus in a kind of verbal battle with other authors.
2 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoUnsure about violation on poetry?
Is asking for an opinion on a poem a violation?
If it is not a violation, can the content of the poem itself be a violation? I would only be asking about structure, rhyme and meter not about the language of the poem, but I would have to post it as-is in order to get those opinions. The poem could be considered anti Islamic.
2 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoDo you think it is worth bothering to watch new shows?
Seeing as most of them now seem to being canceled, in most cases WITHOUT wrapping up the story. I know that if everyone had this attitude then there would be very poor viewings for new shows and it would make the problem worse, but, I'm getting sick of having my time wasted watching shows that will never be resolved.
3 AnswersOther - Television1 decade agoResisting wrongful arrest?
This is pertaining to the UK. Recently, I was stopped by some guy I knew (I didn't particularly like him, he was a special brew waster.) in the street asking me for money. I refused and continued on my way, this guy then gets in my way physically stopping me with his hand and arm. So I punched him, knocking him over. A few days later, the police knock on my door to discuss this incident. I let them in and explain what happened, they caution me and say I may be charged with assault. That was the last I heard of it. As far as I can tell, from the legal stuff I can find online, this guy had performed a wrongful arrest (restraining me) to which I was entitled to resist with reasonable force, which I believe hitting him ONCE was reasonable. I know the law in this country often favors the antagonists, but what do you think my chances are?
3 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoWill this dying idea look as good as I think it may?
The idea I had was to bleach my hair platinium. Then shave my hair very short so there is only a very small length of platinium hair left. Then as my hair grows back, I will have dark hair tipped by a small amount of white. I have seen animals with fur like this and it looks awesome, kinda metallic and shimmery.
3 AnswersHair1 decade agoIs question pimping a YA violation?
I see a lot of this. Someone will ask a specific question and get 0 replies. So they ask another very general question such as "Do you like Tomatoes?" or "Do you like PCs or MACs" or "Coke or Pepsi?" and in the question details they pimp the question they asked previously. This is obviously a (failed) covert attempt to try to get more to look at their original question, and they have no interest in the "pimping" question's answers.
3 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoMicrosoft Windows trademarks?
I'm a tad light on what Microsoft actually has trademarked with regard to Windows. It is my understanding that a generic or dictionary word cannot be trademarked. Since Window(s) is a generic term referring to a GUI visual element used to contain other GUI elements in a separate environment. How can they possibly trademark it? I have heard that it is in fact "Microsoft Windows" that is trademarked, but that makes no sense either, seeing as "Microsoft" alone will already be a trademark, it would be superfluous to trademark "Microsoft Windows". On all windows logos I see the TM above the word Windows, indicating that it is that word alone that is trademarked. So I wonder just how they managed to get it trademarked in the first place, as it should have been rejected, and has anyone ever challenged it?
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoWhat is the name for a non-religious person?
Imagine that a remote island with a native population is discovered, this island has had no contact with the rest of the world ever. The people on this island have no concept of religion at all, it simply has never existed there. Thus, religiously, these people have nothing to believe AND nothing to dis-believe. This cannot make them theists or atheists, so what are they?
The actual probability of this scenario is irrelevant, it's simply to make a point. Both atheists and theists make a point of stating "You must either believe or disbelieve, there is no other option", when there clearly is, the third option is simple ignorance (either by design or by circumstance). This is because belief or disbelief is an active decision, someone unwilling or unable to give the decision any active thought cannot be placed in either camp.

I was writing an essay on the benefits of cloud computing when the write server went down. I'm just looking for things to do until it comes back up. Any suggestions?
Ah, here we go, the server is back up. Unfortunately, there was a system crash at the write server and it has rolled back two hours so my essay has gone.
4 AnswersOther - Computers1 decade agoYorkshire Pudding Cottage Pie?
I often buy those frozen giant yorkshire puddings from the supermarket. I put mince beef and onions (cooked) into them and top them off with mashed potato and cheese. Bake them in the oven until the yorkshire pudding is crispy and serve with vegetables. These are very very popular with my family, but I have no idea what to call them. I'm sure they must have been made before by others and have an official name. Anyone know what it is?
