Pro-Lifers: How many of you have adopted; especially babies with birth defects or diseases or addicted mothers

I used to work in an urban hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I saw many babies that were born premature, addicted to drugs, with HIV+ status or other diseases, as well as other birth defects. I saw one baby that was born to a 13 year-old whose family member had raped her. I saw babies that grew into children that had various physical, behavioral, emotional, and learning disabilities.

How many of you have adopted some of these children? If you have not -- how is it that you are so self-righteous that you feel you have the right to tell the rest of society that all pregnancies should be carried to term? What are you doing to help the inner city schools that are overwhelmed with these kids that are born into such sad situations that learning reading, writing and arithmetic are the least of their problems?

How many of you are willing to admit that you sit in your cushy houses and put on your Sunday best every week, but are completely ignorant to the horrors of their lives?

Update:

Tom:

Thank you for being a strong person and overcoming your disability and living a life that is truly reflective of your beliefs.

Alexandra and Powdermonkey:

You are misinformed (denial!). There's NOT a demand for kids with disabilities or minorities without disabilities. Feel free to travel to your nearest city and talk to anyone who works for the faster care system.

David S:

Do not twist my words. The children I've known in these situations are beautiful and loving and worthy of a better life. The one person who has been the biggest inspiration in my life is the mother whose son was born with severe spina bifida and would never walk; yet she went through rehab and attended counseling every day to overcome her addition and face up to her responsibility rather than let him become a ward of the state. I am just sickened by all the hypocrisy surrounding this issue.

waltzorro:

I am PRO-PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. But most people do not have such good self-restraint, including priests!

Update 2:

Missy:

There's no need for name-calling. I find that what that nurse did is abhorrent, and she should not only have lost her job, but her nursing license as well -- and have been denied the right to work in any medical position anywhere. In addition to being immoral, that's a serious ethical violation!

Update 3:

plumouttamymind:

I did not say that I thought so little about your life! Don't put words in my mouth! You are very fortunate, and your life is a testimony to why these people who want to push adoption should be doing some adopting themselves! My beef is that they say "give the baby up for adoption" but SOOO few of them actually adopt, especially if the child is of a different race or requires a lot of care.

This question was NOT about abortion! It was about the "unwanted" children that we already have in abundance in our country and world.

I wanted to know if those who want to impose their beliefs on others are actually practicing what they preach. Only one has, and one "knows someone" who has.

I wondered if they realize that many of these kids wish they had been adopted, and how many wish they had never been born because their lives are complete misery.

I wonder if they're aware that these children grow up, and most of them wind up in some form of institution or another (group homes, mental health facilities, jail).

I'm NOT saying abortion is the answer, I'm asking, what have YOU PERSONALLY done for them once they're born?

I have two adopted children... and yes, there are some medical problems...

my major obstacle to adopting... believe it or not.. is being disabled myself.

Let me tell you something you sanctimonious little b****. When my unmarried daughter was pregnant, one of the "pro-choice" nurses called her, after office hours, and told her that her baby had a birth defect. My daughter became hysterical. I met this nurse in the doctors office the next morning and confronted her about taking upon herself what the physian was supposed to do. When it all came out into the open, this nurse told an absolute LIE to my child. She did this in the hopes that my daughter would take her word for it and have an abortion. You know what? She didn't even lose her job. I wonder how many young pregnant girls and women she did this t

If you hadn't started slinging the self-righteous insults I wouldn't have even bothered to answer you. You reap what you sow. And by the way, I do know a Christian family who have adopted not one but five disabled children...and counting.

Well, you bring up a lot of good, valid points, which are very true, but you're missing the point that these babies don't choose to create themselves. They just happen, the natural result of sexual intercourse. So you can't defend the right of anyone, especially their own mother, to take their life away just because they are inconvenient. We pro-lifers do believe wholeheartedly in adoption. Some of us are hypocrites, but others who don't have the means to adopt donate money to adoption agencies and foster homes. I, personally, am a 19-year old single guy, so I don't have the means to adopt yet. I am still a virgin, though, so I'm doing my part.

Thank you! They should have to walk up to every 11 or 12 year old who got raped and say, "Look this book said you cannot get an abortion." And, then they should have to live with them to experience the hell they go through. It is so easy for them to sit on their high horses and sneer at people. I haven't ever been pregnant, but even I can see how I am not righteous enough to make this decision for someone. And, if the country puts restrictions on it, then people will be put through undue burden and every woman who falls down the stairs when pregnant will be put in jail!!!

You know that there are waiting lists of people wanting to adopt such children? There are people wanting to adopt Down's children, there are people wanting to adopt children with spina bifida....

The demand is bigger than the supply. And killing these poor children before birth doesn't help matters there.

I have every right--and a DUTY--to declare that the unborn should be allowed to live. They're people too. Who are you to decide that certain innocents should die!?

I have not adopted any. But there are waiting lists of people wanting to adopt kids that are willing to pay big money to adoption agencies.(which shows they are serious about getting a kid and will probably take good care of them and have the money to do it) I think a difference between you and me is that I see the kid as a child while it is in the womb, so I see killing it the same as killing a 1 or 2 year old.

I could in no way abort a little one seeing that of meant disorder- that's rather simply gambling God. I realize any one who had conjoined twins, and it used to be reccomended that she abort one to avoid wasting the opposite. She advised the health care provider that he used to be loopy. Both infants are alive and really healthful. They had been efficaciously separated in a while after delivery and feature a couple of well being disorders, however lead traditional lives. We rather are an illiberal folks if we could abort a little one seeing that it has defects. I idea that Americans had grown past apart from folks with disablitlies. I bet I am unsuitable.

    Totally.

A friend of mine wrote a one-act play that, successfully and without bias communicated every side of abortion. But since it was a play the characters were deeply personal, like real people. One of the characters said just what you said, how can we bring these children into the world and not afford them, for no one else to adopt because they are deformed?

    I entirely agree, beautifully said.

Pro-lifers are truly only pro-birth. After that it doesn't matter to them.

These addicted, physically handicapped children have a right to life. They are the most lovable of all children I believe, and if no one ever adopted them, it would be better for them than partial birth abortion, or to never have a life at all. But...guess what, loads of them are adopted or in loving foster homes which is better than the death you choose for them.

You said nothing about women's freedom to choose; instead, you focused on the tragedy of babies who are born defective. It sounds as though you favor the use of abortion to achieve eugenic goals. Congratulations may be in order. Neither the pro-Lifers nor the pro-Choicers have their thinking straight. The national socialists had the right idea. The national stock, itself, should be pruned and purged of the worst of its genetic defectiveness, and abortion is a useful tool for achieving a constitutionally sounder humanity.
