I found this on Animal Planet:

"To determine if your cat is overweight, run your hand along his side. If you can not feel his ribs, it is time to start a weight reduction program. If your cat does not have a waist, that is another indication it is time to start a weight reduction program. "

The rest of the article goes on to describe several ways to deal with weight maintenance:

It depends on the breed and build of the cat. My male is a big DSH....he's about 12-13lbs. He WAS 12, but was getting tubby...but since we've switched his food (two meals of canned instead of free-grazing on dry), he's been losing weight. HIS healthy weight is right around 12-13lbs. However, my female is very petite. She weighed 7 1/2lbs. when we got her, but she was real skinny. Just remember that 1 pound is a lot on a cat. I'm thinking once she's done filling out, she'll be around 8-8 1/2lbs.

Just like people it depends on their bone structure and length (our height) of the body.

I have two male cats at around 12 pounds, 2 females at around 8 (one should be 7) and one female at 7. Sylvie is thirteen and she looks like a fashion model - horrifyingly thin to me and she just had blood work done and an exam and was pronounced perfectly healthy by the vet.

Oscar weighs in at 6.15 kilos, which is 18 lbs according to the vet. Obviously the vet can't do her sums as according to mine that is 13.9 lbs. Inky weighs in at round about 7lbs, the vet didn't bother weighing her. Oscar is ginger & white, his sister is white and black. All but one of the male cats I have had over the years have been heavier than all but one of the females, with the ginger ones being the largest of them all.

Well I have 6. Most of them weigh around 10 lbs, but my Bubbis weights a whopping 22 lbs and he is very healthy and active. In fact, yesterday he brought me a woodpecker. So it really depends on their parents.

12lbs some might say 14lbs is ok but its too much bc then they'll be less active & get even fatter! 15lbs or more i would say is wayy too much unless u have the larger type of a cat like the main coon.
