How do I get the smell of urine off my cat?

He peed in his carrier on the way home from the vet's office. His back legs got pretty soaked in his own pee, as did his front paws. Is there any home remedies out there short of just waiting for him to clean himself off?

Paper toweling him dry was no use in regards to the smell. He is confined to the bathroom right now until I can think of what to do!

Hi there... consider using Nature's Miracle Just for Cats. It's an enzymatic neutralizer which breaks down urine proteins. It's non-toxic (safe) and when you spritz a little on the hand towel you can wipe away the urine odours. It's also wonderful for accidental urine stains in carpeting and other items that are soiled as well.

I can't believe people are recommending putting lemon juice or vinegar on your cat! Please don't. Cats don't like baths in general. It is a two person job. First you put a towel in the bottom of the bath tub so they don't slide around. Then one person hold the cat and the other person bathes. Gently wet the cat with lukewarm water and use cat shampoo (human or other shampoo is harmful to your cat if swallowed, which it will be because they lick themselves dry). Then rinse off with lukewarm water. Just make sure your work from the neck down. There really is no need to wash kitty's head (if you have to wash the head, use a damp washcloth and gently wipe). Second, get your cat fixed. If she is going out and meeting up with other cats and getting sprayed on (and bringing home unwanted litters) you need to get her fixed. This is really low cost if you go through a humane society and is a one time thing. You can use a dry shampoo, like others have recommended, but I doubt it will work very well on urine. Worth a try though. Good luck!

Depending on the temperment of your cat you can do several things.

1 - For "scary/violent" cat - Have help! Fill a pot or large bowl with warm water and VERY mild soap. Baby soap is good if you have it. Dawn dish liquid works well too but use very little. With a wash cloth wipe down your cat. Pay close attention to the butt and inner thigh, they tend to get extra pissy when you touch there.

2 - For "mellow cat" - Fill tub with warm water about 3 inches or so. Not too high. Add a mild soap to the water and using a washcloth or small cup to rinse off the cats back and fron end. Be sure not to get water or soap in the eyes or ears.

In either case most cats HATE the hair dryer. Try to towel dry your cat as much as possible then give it someplace warm to hang out and dry itself.

    Good Luck

I've tried the fancy remedies too. The best (and cheapest) product you can use it old-fashioned white vinegar. Poor some in a spray bottle and treat the affected spot - use this before any other cleaning agent. The vinegar will neutralize the pheromones in the urine. I have 3 cats and have used this to successfully rid clothes of the strong smell in my laundry. However, never use ammonia still cat the smell is similar to cat urine.

  • Empty all of the cat litter and clean the litter box with soap and water. Then bathe your cat.

  • Well you could quit peeing on him--or go to petsmart and look for a wet shampoo --I don't remember the name but it works-just ask the person working there

Spray him with "Urine Gone" Its a powerful aerosol which takes care of the smell.

Give your cat a bath with no more tears baby shampoo. I've done this before and it works very well.
