Stupid neighborhood cat bit me!! why??

Ok my wife and I have been living here for about 2 months now, and weve noticed around half a dozen cats around, we had some kitty food left over from we were cat sitting about a year ago, and we were feeding them and petting them and what not. The wierd thing is that some of the cats would let us touch them and some wouldn't, one perticular cat that would come around and meow until you petted it, and it was cute cause if you held you hand up it would jump to rub the side of its head against it lol and it would sometimes let you pick it up but it was obvious that it was uneasy about it. well this morning at about 1030am it woke me up meowing at the window and I went out to follow it around and pet it. then it bit me!! I didnt think anything about it, but I kept playing with it then I picked it up and was petting it and it really got me good. then it came in the house and I was getting it some left overs to eat and was sitting on the foor with it in my lap and it just started

Update:

really bitting the hell outta me, i mean the first one or two times it bit me it didnt hurt and i made sure to say oww!! but the last couple times it just layed it on me, my wife put it out of the house, but man my hand is throbbing, red and getting stiff, i dont know if the cats rabid or something and I should get it put down or what? I mean its not MY cat persay so I dont wanna take it to a vet and pay a huge bill just to be told cats are cats. any one have any idea of what happened? and also why some neighbor hood cats that you feed will let you pet them and some wont even though they eat right next to the cat that will let you pet it ?

First, no it does not mean the cat is rabid. Second, you should get on antibiotics if your bite is red and swollen. Put alcohol on it and ice to take down the swelling. Third, in my experience, the number one reason for people getting bit by a cat is ignoring the warning signs. "The first one or two times it bit me didn't hurt that bad". Cat's give warning signs when they want someone to stop what they're doing. People keep messing with the cat even though it has clearly said, "leave me alone". Swishing tails, hissing, growling and nipping does not seem to deter people. These all mean STOP. You were lucky to get two warnings before the cat really laid into you.

In the veterinary world, that cat would be classified as "fractious." It is most likely a feral cat who has learned that it can get food and shelter by associating with people. Unfortunately, the habits displayed by ferals are hard to break. Sometimes they just don't want to be messed with. They want the food, but not the affection. It doesn't make them mean cats, it just makes them cats who aren't fully socialized with people. I doubt the cat will run up and attack you if you go outside, but give it plenty of space. Let it come to you for affection and don't pick it up or touch its tummy. If the cat is showing outrageous aggression toward everyone in the neighborhood or attacking at random, it could be rabies. Look for a lot of panting or a film on the eyes. If you think the cat has rabies, call animal control.

This cat has learned that if you do anything to it that it doesn't like at all it can get you to stop doing it by biting you, you aslo reinforce this by still giving it food. Unless you start to see the cat acting very strange and hostile all the time, it probably isn't rabbid. You do want to keep a careful watch on your wounds though considering a cats mouth is filled with bacteria that could lead to a serious infection. If the cat does happen to be rabbid than you can still recieve the vaxine after you have gotten the rabies virus.

I think she was just playing tough. You need to disinfect the wound and get some antibiotics as a precaution for 4 days. Also a tetanus shot to be sure. I don't know where you live, but in the civilised world rabies has vanished. Nevertheless, make sure that you watch the cat for 10 days (feed her so that she comes and you see her every day), to make sure she is healthy. If she is healthy still after 10 days, you're OK.

Don't take her to a vet or a society, because they might put her down and then you will never know if she was healthy.Plus, cats are cats, you can't blame them for their nature, my own cat who is a "sofa cat" bites me really hard sometimes, my dad went to the hospital because of him, but other times he is cuddly and nice.

If there are other cats and they are outside cats, than there is a huge possibility (depending on where you live) that one cat was rapid and it started to spread. If the cat scratched you than there is a possibility that you could have a illness called Cat Scratch Fever(no joke)

My advice is to see a docter imediatly, get help, also if you can, put the cat in a cage and bring it with you to the docter/vet to see if the cat is rapid.

    Feel better!

Shouldn't have fed the cats in the first place. And sure as heck should't touch and hold animals that came out of nowhere. There's a reason they do all those tests and vaccinations at the shelter.

take it to a vet, say it's not yours, it's a wild cat and it bites and ask for them to do something with it....

as long as it's not yours they can't charge you for it. but as soon as you say that you can't adopt it or call to check on it or anything.

Simply, Cats are the one of the most stupid animals an earth. Not to mention they are freakin self centered.
