Neighbours keep blaming my brothers cat for causing problems even though they have never witnessed an attack?

My brother has a 6.5yr old cat who has spent his life outside most of the day, coming inside for the night at dinner time. He never received complaints past until the last couple of weeks. The people in the house a couple of doors down are blaming my brothers cat for attacking their cat on 3 occasions, causing $800 in damage, having never witnessed any attacks. Their cat had its stomach ripped open and they blame my brothers cat, even with the vet saying he thought it was a dog attack and didn't believe a cat could have caused those injuries.

Since they have come and complained on the weekend the cat has been kept inside for over 2 days only been let out for 30mins over both days, and she complained when he went outside for potty break today.

He has never killed a bird or drawn blood from a human, he is the most pleasant cat.

What can we do cause if we let him out they complain and the husband has threatened to kill my brothers cat if he sees it on their property. Need help please

Update:

The cat has been fixed, and since then he spends most of the time sleeping. He became real lazy after the operation and maybe has energetic bursts once or twice a week, otherwise he is extremely calm, sleeping in the sun or on the couch.

We know that there are other cats in the area but they won't listen to that and their cat has been in my brothers backyard before.

Tell these people that you'll have NO PROBLEM calling the police and sueing the sh<it out of them if they do ANYTHING to your cat. They need to get real BIG TIME. Sounds like they don't know sh<it about cats and dogs.

I'd say keep your cat indoors for a few weeks, without telling the neighbours. I'm sure the occurances happen at smaller frequencies, this is a good way to ensure it's not your cat, then your entire family can prove it. When he goes outside after that, be with him, just to make sure he does not wander onto their property. No need to force him to stay indoors if he vcan safely be with you outdoors since he has enjoyed this freedom for so many years.

If your cat went outside for potty and didn't go onto their property, they are just harassing you. Are there any other cats in your area? See if you can take any pictures of any other cats on their property. Also see if you spot THEIR cat in any other properties, and see if you can get pics of this.

Is your cat spayed/neutered? If not, that's a good place to start since an unfixed cat will hno doubt be spraying.

Do yourself a legal favour, start a paper trail, send them an email saying that you feel this isn't being fair to your cat. Also put down that even the vet felt that the injuries could not have been caused by a cat but a dog. No doubt they will respond with all kinds of threats. This way you can legally prove (email is legally admissable in any court) that they are threatening your cat and giving you undue harassment.

Put complain to police against the people in the house a couple of doors down stating that they threatens to kill your brother's cat and there by to take the law of the land in their own hand and breaking the peace of the area. In fact they are not cat lover at all.

That is truly unfortunate to have a neighbor as difficult as that. If he would not listen to his own vet who says that another cat could not have ripped open his cat's tummy but that rather it was a dog attack, then no one can talk to him. Its time to think very carefully about this. Your cat's safety is paramount. Since your cat enjoys the outdoors, why not buy or build him an outdoor enclosure. I have one for my two cats even though we have a huge fenced backyard. I bought a chainlink kennel with a door and a top. It is really meant for dogs, but it keeps my two cats in safely. There are several sizes you can choose from and these kennels aren't all that expensive. Mine cost a little over $200.00. It measures 13ft long x 7ft wide x 7ft tall. Or youcan "cat -proof" your fence. Google "cat enclosures" and you'll see various ways to do it. The other alternative is to keep your cat indoors; leash-train him and let him out on outdoor excursions only on a leash.

I would get a litter tray and keep the cat inside. Dont risk these **** holes hurting your cat. If they take the accusations any further get a statement from the vet to say that in their opinion the cat was attacked by a dog. Its better to have an unhappy cat inside rather than a dead cat. My cat used to be an outdoor cat but adjusted well to becoming an indoor cat. He will be fine.

Since your brother has had the cat for so many years, it should be a very domestic cat. But since it is out in the day most of the time, it will be a bit wild as it has to survive on its own; to protect itself when someone wants to harm him.

If he stays home most of the time, he will be very tame. But I believe a cat should be let out to roam so that it will be healthy; fat cats are not healthy. So let it be with nature...... plants, flowers, birds, butterflies, trees(able to polish their nails too).

Since your brother's neighbour owns a cat too, he should be a cat lover too. Get your brother to talk to him nicely and bring their cats together and see how the cats behave towards each other. If they fight, it is not surprising as one cat normally cannot accommodate another, as they want to protect their own territory, maybe one cat could have cross the other's territory. My cat normally chase other cats out of her territory.

My neighbour even complained that she has attacked her dog by scratching his eye. But because of my good relationship with my neighbour she is still allowed to be sleeping at their shoe rack just outside their house; with the door closed so that their dog would not get hurt.

Therefore, tell your brother not to let this matter affect his relationship with his neighbours or it would be even worse, make friends with them and who knows they might also fall in love with your brother's cat.

i'd start keeping the kitty inside. my sister had something like that happen and the people shot her cat and killed it. unfortunatly where i live its perfectly legal to shot stray or feral cats if they are on your property so nothing we could do about it. besides indoor cats stay healthier, are less likely to be injured by dogs or other animals and less likey to be hit by a car.

Are there dogs that run free in the neighborhood?

That kind of injury sounds like a dog did it.

Tell them to keep their cat indoors.

some people need to blame someone, even if it is not their fault....I cant see a cat changing into a monster after it has always been placid..the cat has every right to go out, and perhaps these neighbours are just bein a pain in the ***

    Hi, I'm Delia.

I think you did better keep your cat indoors. Or tell your neighbour to shut their door if they don't want your cat in their property. : D
