There are numerous businesses that do this type of work. They don't work for free. Do you?

You can do a lot of public records searches, check with the department of state for corporations (most states), check for deeds, mortgages and whatnot in the recorders office. Run a police report search with the sheriff and city police. Etc.
Of course, no one works for free. So if you're not willing to pay the $50 or so that different companies charge for it, you will be doing a lot more leg work trying to get what they can get in 15 minutes. Doing it by hand takes days, even weeks.

it's not free but close enough to it...
depending on what state you live in, you can usually log onto a records bureau through the Department of Public Safety. In Texas, a basic criminal record search costs about $3, and you can buy credits in any amount. you search by name and birthdate.

unless you pick up the phone and start calling everyone he has ever known, then get depositions, and can actually get the gossip and second-hand info entered as testimony.
